Hi Folks
It was at the UKTrainSim site when it went down just before 17:00 last night. I wasn't very happy about the outage, I guess nobody does.
Hopefully the outage will be solved soon, but the owner might have other commitments at this time.

Matt Peddlesden has posted a statement at the UKTS fourm following a major downtime:
Matt Peddlesden wrote: I have no belief that any data has been compromised - and at this point it may yet be other system malfunction rather than anything malicious, I am watching logs at the moment having reset it all earlier to see if I can find out more information.
What I do know is that normally the server runs no problem at all for weeks at a time - yesterday the database kept crashing over and over and I restarted the whole system numerous times. These were down to the database becoming inaccessible which is usually because it's run out of available connection slots - because the others are all being consumed with something holding them open (which can be as simple as a nasty search).
Having reset it this morning i've not seen any more problems so far but am still monitoring.
The type of attack, if it is an attack, is called a Denial of Service attack - basically, if I keep sending packets and connections to your server, your server becomes unable to do anything else at best, and at worst will actually crash because of the overload. What these people do is to use a "bot network" - which is usually a bunch of hacked PC's because of malware that people have installed, and then instruct those PC's to attack a single address.
This is not a "steal data" attack, it may not even be an attack, at best, it's an annoying denial of service attack.
No panic folks, other than not being able to access the site of course :-P
Thanks for your patience.
Matt.

Hi David,
You're right, it is strange!
I've tried Firefox and Internet Explorer, but both give similar results. I've also changed the DNS servers I use from Google to OpenDNS without success.
As you're having no problem, it appears that it must be one of the servers between us in the UK and UKTS Forum which has gone down. You are probably on a different "circuit", but I still don't understand how I can still download from UKTS!!
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Is UKTS Down
I can assure you both the forums and the main site are up. If people are having issues then please email support@atomic-systems.com with as much information as possible such as screenshots of error messages and ping tests to show whether the problem lies out on the internet somewhere or closer to home.
I am certainly seeing no issues currently and have just done a test download that came down very quickly.
Please note this email address only deals with connectivity, premium membership and CD ordering issues. It is not for issues regarding forum moderation.

Hi Ged,
When you changed DNS did you use IPCONFIG to flush your DNS cache? If not it will likely have the old DNS entries until they expire.

Re: Is UKTS Down
Hi John,
Thanks for reminding me Unfortunately, it hasn't helped.
Ping results were OK - 26mS for both uktrainsim.com and forums.uktrainsim.com
My main PC dual boots into Win 7 and Win 10 and on both, I can't access the Forums. Over the last few days, I had installed some new programs, but uninstalling them wasn't beneficial.
Switched to a different Win7/Win10 PC, which hadn't been used since 1 August and that had the same result - original DNS and no additional programs had been installed.
Finally, I tried a 4G mobile broadband dongle, but the results were the same.
If the situation is the same tomorrow, I'll send an email to the address you gave with this information, a screenshot of the ping results and the current message Google Chrome gives.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Is UKTS Down
Thanks Ged for the detailed feedback.
I still have full access from here in Portsmouth and I don't understand why people are having issues. We have had forums posts tonight from other people and downloads appear to be working.
I am at work all day tomorrow and then the 2 - 3 hour drive home but I will be monitoring the support desk but I can't access the site or forums from work due to our net nanny filtering.
Regards

UKTS did have an issue earlier. Looks like the database got stuck up it's own behind for some reason and there were no connection sockets available. Normal service has been resumed.

Sorry to bump, but rather than start a new thread...
Could someone who still uses/has a forum account at UKTS pop a post in their admin section that the CD ordering page is not loading from the main site and I can't find a back door into it.
I rather fancied treating myself to North Wales Coast 2 having had a bit of fun in the original the last couple of evenings running in OR.
Many thanks.
Edit: I've also emailed Atomic System support.

Hi Vern,
I've just tried this, and the CD ordering page is loading just fine.
You do need your ukts user name / password to access though. I cant remember if this has always been the case??

Re: Is UKTS Down
Hi All,
Well, not actually completely down, but both Chrome and Firefox report that the UKTS Forum site is 'unsafe', with the latter showing the following message :
"It’s likely the website’s certificate is expired, which prevents Firefox from connecting securely."
I have sent an email to UKTS Support and hope they will sort it out soon The download page doesn't seem to be affected .... yet!!
It is possible to get into the Forum, but before any new page is shown, the warning message is re-displayed.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Is UKTS Down
I have 2 reports of issues with the UKTS forums but despite asking for screenshots nobody is providing them so I am off doing other things for the next few hours.
No tickets have been received and the thread in the Site Admin forum is still devoid of screenshots.
I am having no issues and haven't all day.

Hi,
As well as trying with Firefox and Chrome under Win 7, I've also used Edge, Chrome and Firefox under Win 10, with the same result.
Of course, all use the same internet connection, which might be the source of the problem! I'm about to test with a completely separate 4G connection, and will report back.
Cheers,
Ged
EDIT : 21:23 Same result! So, could it be due to geographical location - maybe the thunderstorms have taken out one of the links?
