Real Railway Movements from Sydney Empty Real Railway Movements from Sydney

Post  j3801 Sun 26 Jul 2015, 5:06 am

Hi All,

Whilst I have been busy the last few months, I have been spending some time out and about on the local rail lines (I catch the train to and from work) and have managed to capture some interesting videos on my phone. Now before you can complain about "poor phone footage", I should let you know that my phone is a Nokia Lumia 1320 phablet (part phone - part tablet computer) so it can record quite high quality videos.

The first video was done at night on Sutherland Station and is of the Cockatoo Run (a diesel hauled heritage train from Sydney to Moss Vale). I had just jumped off a bus from Bankstown and walked around to the station and saw it sitting in the platform.

The second video is at Sutherland again, though during the day. I happened to be on the platform when this unusual consist rolled through (unusual as light engine moves during the day are very rare).

Back to night at Hurstville this time. I was coming home from work in Bondi Junction and my train happened to start pacing this coal train just south of Sydenham. I knew that it would have to wait for a path south of Hurstville so I was able to jump off my train, change platforms and film it as it passed through.

At Sydney Terminal (Central Station) at night on the way to my course I happened upon this rather unusual consist.
Turns ot it is actually the trak inspection train made up of coaches from the old Southern Aurora. The 2 lass 48's in such unique colours is also a bonus.

Justin

(p.s. If you are unsure as to where these locations are, have a drive of Brian Bere-Streeter's Main Illawarra V3).

Roger,

Please excuse the "bad commentary", it was after a 9hr shift at the end of a 38hr week and I was a bit tired and excited and impatient waiting for the coal train to approach. It seemed to come up to just outside the station lighting and pause before slowly moving into the light (hence the Peek-a-boo I see you).

The cleanliness of the platforms is partially thanks to the introduction of the Opal card (our version of the Oyster card from London). During peak hour no "normal" train tickets are sold so station staff have to be out of the offices cleaning platforms.

Alec,

I don't mind just sitting back and watching the trains go by, especially when you can see some interesting things go by.
A pity my train wasn't quicker into Hurstville for the Coal train video as there was an empty steel train heading through when I got there. That would have made an interesting video!!!

One day I may get to hang around Wolli Creek station (is is the site of a junction where services for the south west leave the Illawarra line).
There is quite often some heavy traffic that is interesting going through that station. And lets not forget that Central plays host to nearly every passenger train that runs in Sydney, so I hope to get some footage of the XPT (our version of the HST125). I think they still have their original engines from when they were built!!!

I do have some photos on my phone as well to upload when I can.

Real Railway Movements from Sydney Empty Re: Real Railway Movements from Sydney

Post  j3801 Sat 05 Sep 2015, 9:12 am

As promised:

First up is a video of 3 generations of suburban multiple units passing through Sydenham. First is a departing "Millennium" 8 car M set (2001-2003 built 2 x 4 car units), followed by an arriving 8 car "Chopper" C set (2 x 4 car units dating from the 1970's), with an 8 car T set "Tangara" (1988-1990 built 2 x 4 car units) thundering through non-stop.

This video is of a quad headed empty steel train heading through Hurstville station. Unfortunately platforms 3 & 4 were barricaded off so I couldn't get any close up footage. Locos are Pacific National NR class NR52, NR 37, NR21 (all carrying new Southern Cross stars at the rear of their hoods) and 82 class leader 8201.

A 5 car Xplorer set Departing Sydney Terminal. No sound for this one as there was too much chatter and background noise going on.

And finally a quick video of one of the "New" (well new to Sydney, they were brought refurbished second had from the manufacturer) light rail vehicles (aka trams) turning off the colonnade at Sydney Terminal and running up past the Capitol Theater.

WOW! Takes me back to the beginning of April, when I spent three days in NSW/Sydney on my way home from New Zealand.
Should have been three and a half but our Boeing 737 got diverted to Canberra on the basis that Sydney Airport was closed due to a heavy Thunderstorm/Hailstones. eventually getting to Sydney late afternoon, Oh well these things happen!
On the Tuesday, I went to Flemington, Lidcombe, and Canterbury saw around seven or so freights plus N-Minus Loads of EMUs
Next day I did a long trek to Maitland on the Hunter Valley line, Well worth the trip,Plenty of coal trains heading for Newcastle (and Sydney?)
The last day I went to Moss Vale stopping off at Burraddo a bit more quiet but never the less very good.
When I get my computer sorted out, will attempt to post a few pictures.
What size to they need to be reduced to? My camera does 6000X40000 DPI.
Cheers
Andy

Andy,

If you upload them via the forums picture hosting (the 17th icon from the left hand side)
there is a resize option which defaults to forum size of 800px. It saves you the hassle of doing that yourself.

(Being cheeky for a moment) Though it wouldn't hurt to have the full sized one available by request..... Very Happy  Laughing  Wink

Sorry, butwhat is the correct proceedure for transferring pictures off the desktop onto the Host it site on TSSH.
When I try The picture appears to overide the Host it thing, and causes the page to vanish.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction. as there does not appear to be any "operating instructions"

Hi Andy, I use photobucket to store my online pics, and post them from there, if you want to post bigger pics from photobucket, you can post thumbnails which are clickable to see the full sized pics.

It sadly looks as if I will have to give this project up as a bad job, I just seem to be going round and round in circles and getting nowhere at all.
I have seven pictures that I have resized myself, I appear to have by accident or otherwise, found what i assume is the browser.
I can only view one picture, if I press Host it
I then get thumnail [url http//wwwservingcom/view/19314963/8][img]
Image DITTO
Image url http//1//i21 serving com/U/f21/19/31/46/93 15/03/18jpg

If I press upload, the whole lpt disapears.

As a matter of interest Ged, Where did you get that link from? I searched right through all of the TSSH threads and could not find it.
Cheers

Hi Andy

If you are having problems uploading your pics from your computer, photobucket is easy to use and is free unless you upload a huge number of pics, I host all my pics on there after re-sizing them, you simply post the IMG code from photobucket into your post and it displays the pic, It has saved me a lot of grief in the past.

Andy,

Sorry for not replying sooner. I wouldn't give up just yet.
Looking back over the link that Ged posted shows that you were able to do it before.
Why not click on the edit button to your posts that contain the photos and copy the link across, if you are able to upload to ServImg through the forum you just need to note down the file name and then adjust the old link to reflect the new file name (I do this when I upload videos, too much if a pain trying to remember how I got it all started years ago).

Then you should be able to post pictures to your hearts content.

Hi Mark/Justin.
I used to be on Photobucket around 7 or 8 years ago but  let it go, So clicking on your link it would not register my name or password Mad (as per usual)
Then it told me that I WAS a user and suddenly I found a load of railway photographs I took in Ontario Canada in 2008 Shocked
They were still there, So I have now added these seven Sydney pictures and have got to find away of getting them on this thread.
But thanks anyway.

Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20015%20RL309%20%20306%208049%20Intermodal%20for%20Botany

Well at last it looks as if  I can only load one picture at a time but here goes..............It;s Tuesday 31st March at Lidcombe RL 309 RL306 and 8049 on an inbound intermodal bound for Botany.

Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20018%20CEY%20001%20002%20and%20005%20empty%20coal%20train%20thru%20Lidcombe

Working the oracle, and by editing this thread looks like I can continue.....SO.... CEY 001 and 005 on I assume coal empties ex Botany? outward bound through Lidcombe and yes, that is rain!

Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20020%208253%208237%208257%208209%20Coal%20train%20in%20the%20rain

Not long later and during a brief thunderstorm a fleet of class 82s  8253 8237 8257 and 8209 heading out of Sydney
with another coal train, I assume empty?

Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20024%208116%208142%20pass%20Flemington%20fruit%20and%20veg%20market%20to%20Botany

A little while at Flemington produced 8116 and 8142 passing Sydney's Convent  Garden fruit and veg market.
Advice that I was given was to head for Canterbury, which I did.
Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20028%208124%208132%201310%20Botany%20at%20Canterbury

This is the 1310 ex Botany Intermodal with 8124 and 8132 passing through Canterbury

Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20031%20NR28%209317%201438%20Enfield%20Steel

This was a good "COP" Indian Pacific NR28  leading nearly new 9317  on the 1438 Enfield steel train to goodness knows where.

Real Railway Movements from Sydney 15%2003%2031%20034%20IR1443%201408%20Syd%20Net%20trip%20Canterbury

And finally this little Gem IR1449 ex (I believe?) Danish State railways? or is it Sweeden? Apparently known as "Helga's" powers an Intermodal presumably heading for Botany.
Not bad for seven trains, eight different classes or Variant of classes of loco's seen that day.

On a technical note , I can not show TSSH and photobucket at the same time.
Is there anyway I can post Multiple photos instead of having to open TSSH find the Real operating railways thread and edit this thread? It is rather labourious but I got there in the end
Many thanks especially to Mark for all your help.
Cheers
Andy

Andy,

Amazing photos mate, you have even managed to capture some engines that I haven't seen before (the CEY's, IR1449, a 93 and the RL's).

As for if the coal trains are empty, if they are heading away from Sydney they would be empty. Another way to tell is if there is a crest of coal above the top of the hoppers.

And yes, random thunder storms are a thing that happens down-under, same as sun showers (where it is raining but there aren't any storm clouds around).
Worst thing is if it is hot when the storms hit, once the storm passes it becomes very humid and the ground can dry out very fast leaving no sign of it having rained.

Post  j3801 Sat 03 Oct 2015, 8:48 am

Hi All,

So Tuesday the 22 of September I was on my way to my morning class in the city when I was walking along the main concourse at Central station (Sydney Terminal) and I happened to notice a few XPTs in the platforms. I checked the indicator boards and noticed that there was one due in in about 5 minutes.

I looked over to Platform one and spotted this:

Real Railway Movements from Sydney Wp_20119
Real Railway Movements from Sydney Wp_20120

That is the rare “indigenous livery” XPT. I was quite surprised to see it.

I walked down the platform where the one was due in and was waiting for it when one of the XPTs a few platforms over sounded its horn for departure. Below is a video of what happened next.

Yes I got a surprise to when the one behind me moved off.

I waited a bit and figured there must have been a delay as the one due for arrival hadn’t shown up, so I started to walk down the platform when this happened:

Later that day I had to go a bit further into the city to take some photo’s for a class assignment. On the way back to Central, I had just gotten on to the Platform when an announcement came over that the next train does not stop. Very odd…. I got my phone out just in time…..

Yes, that is a Diesel rail inspection car in the underground tunnels in Sydney. It stunk a bit after it passed through.
