Thoughts on Open Rails Empty Thoughts on Open Rails

Post  rufuskins Wed 01 Jul 2015, 2:38 pm

It has been interesting to see simmers now trying to get to grips with Open Rails, and it is obvious that OR is not a direct replacement for MSTS. Thankfully we can make use of MSTS routes and stock, but in terms of stock it is becoming apparent that driving an activity in OR is a different experience to that in MSTS. Again that is only to be expected as OR is meant to be more than an MSTS clone. I read with interest various simmers' experiences with OR, which of course should highlight those differences and allow ENG/WAG files to be modified to suit. I shall continue to observe with interest.

I like Open Rails, but until there's OR-specific tools for it, ie route-builder, my interest is limited to just "playing" it.

Since OR reached V1 status I have been using it more, it still has a long way to go but the latest improvements have made it more useable.

I am now using OR to test my latest activity (and hopefully the first act to be made available via download) the autopilot mode is especially useful for activity testing, any timings I achieve in OR should be attainable in MSTS, but not necessarily the other way round.

I thought I would add this here rather than starting a new topic.

I've been running Thames Trent V2 in ORTS and very enjoyable too, but there is one annoyance that I've noted on one or two other routes too. That is, sometimes when you enter a curved section, the track texture will revert to a very crude default style rather than display the texture the route builder chose. Rather destroys the sense of immersion and realism. Anyone else found this and do we know of a cure?

Hi Vern
I believe this effect is caused by using (I  think it's called) "Track Elevation", from the "Experimental" tab.  The system is unable to convert certain sections of track and, as you say, reverts to the MSTS default.  I'm sure it'd be better to run with Track Elevation un-selected!

Cheers,
Ged

I have been following Open Rails developments. Some routes work well, but on LSE I get frame rates of 7 where I have 60 on MSTS. R.

Hi,
@Vern - Apologies! I should have said "Super Elevation" instead of "Track Elevation" Embarassed

@Roderic - I've just started a sample activity in LSE and got about 60fps in Windowed mode and 50+ in Full Screen mode. Obviously, the values you get will depend on your processor and graphics card, but make sure that the Viewing Distance is not too high - try the default value of 2000m and see if it's any better. Also, don't use Super Elevation; keep everything as near to default as possible, then, if that's OK, you can add one "enhancement" at a time and see its effect.

Cheers,
Ged

There isn't as far as i know the necessary profile created for UKFS track to enable a correctly drawn trackbed when SE is in use.

Have a look at the download in post #7 in this thread on Elva's Tower.  It works really well for me.  I have also modified all the UKFS shapes to remove the shimmering track, but I believe that permissions issues preclude uploading.

I'm the author of the OR track profile you mention. You are free to upload it wherever you like.

Thanks Carlo. However, my reference to permissions related to my modified UKFS shape files rather than your OR track profile (for which thanks) which is still freely available in the ET forum link I included above.

My IT man has checked that all the requirements for Open Rails have been downloaded and installed correctly. I am still getting very low frame rates below 15 whereas in MSTS they are 40 - 60.

Here is a test log: I think I could learn Chinese more easily.

This is a log file for Open Rails. Please include this file in bug reports.

Hi Roderic,
Your OR log only shows one parameter which might affect your framerates. That is the Performance Tuner setting  - you have it set as 'true' but I suggest you change it to 'false'.  That being said, I've just run that activity using the same version of OR twice, one with the Performance Tuner set 'false' (my normal setting) and the other with it set to 'true'.  There was no discernable difference in my framerates, being between about 52 and 66.  It'd be worth you changing your setting because you are using a graphics card (GT 620 1GB) which is not really meant for gaming - mine is a 2GB GTX 750ti.

Looking at the log in more detail, you also seem to have Logging and Profiling set - I suggest you turn them both off.

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged,

Thank you very much for looking at my OR log.

Could you tell me where to find the Performance Tuner setting? Is that in OR or the Nvidia settings? I haven't succeeeded in finding it yet.

I have turned Logging off, but where do I find Profiling?

We are looking into fitting a Nvidia GTX750ti, but it needs a PCI3 slot and we have only a PCI1 slot. If this proves impossible to overcome, can you suggest an alternative that should work with OR?

Many thanks for all your help.

Roderic

Hi Roderic,
You'll find the Performance Tuner setting in Open Rails. Press the Options button, then the Experimental tab; if there's a tick in the "Automatically tune settings to keep performance level" box, click it to remove the tick.

Regarding the PCIe socket in your PC.  Are you sure that yours uses v1.0?  I ask because that is very old, dating from 2003; v2.0 was released in 2007 and v3.0 in 2010.

Your GT620 uses PCIe v2.0, so the 750ti should run OK, but maybe at a slightly lower speed if your socket is not v3.0.  Make sure your PSU has a 6-pin connection marked PCIe, otherwise the 750ti won't work!
If your motherboard really does have PCIe v1.0, although the 750ti should work, it might struggle a bit. Please let me know the manufacturer and model number of the motherboard, or the PC manufacturer and model and I'll see if I can check it out.

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Roderic,
Thanks for the information on your PC. Smile

Electrically, a 750 ti should be supported because it's a modern PC.
However, there are two big BUTS!!
1. As it's a small size tower, it might not be able to accommodate a full sized 750 ti card
2. Unless you have upgraded the PSU it almost certainly won't be able to power a full sized 750 ti card, and may not have the necessary connection.

A 'low-profile' version of the 750 ti is available which doesn't need the extra PCIe power connection and might fit your PC. You really need to have somebody look at your PC to check that this card will be OK.

Looking at the spec. sheet for the 3020, it only mentions that an AMD graphics card may be fitted, but as you are running an NVIDIA card, they must work OK!

Cheers,
Ged

Thanks a lot, Ged, I have a very good IT engineer working on it at this end, and I shall pass on your very helpful comments.

Kind regards,
