"Any railway that paints their locomotives such a magnificent shade of red, must be the most superior in the land" (apologies to the late David Jenkinson).
Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi,
@Brian : With the greatest respect, the version of MidEast Coast available from the TSSH library is the original v1.0, dated 4 Dec 2021 which was previously hosted on UKTS.
@Paul : The latest version is 1.6.7.4, dated 30 Nov 2023 and is available from https://github.com/MECoast/MECoast
Left-click the green 'Code' button (upper right of centre) then left-click the 'Download ZIP' option which appears at the bottom of the drop-down list.
It'll take a while because it is almost 4GB in size - make sure you've got enough space!!
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Peter,
After you've unpacked MidEast Coast, you end up with a folder named MECoast-main which contains GLOBAL, ROUTES, SOUND and TRAINS folders.
That's it!! Folder MECoast-main is like the old Train Simulator root folder. Tell Open Rails where to find it (using OPTIONS > Content) then you can run any of the Activities, or in Explore mode.
In case you're only using MSTS, sorry, but MEC is too big and won't run!!
Cheers,
Ged

Hi Peter,,
Don't worry, you're never too old!!
I can't add anything to my last post, but the route is not actually 'installed' - you only 'point' Open Rails (using the Options > Content tab) to the location of the MEC-main folder. Please confirm that you have this folder and its GLOBAL, ROUTES, SOUND and TRAINS subfolders.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Peter,
Long time, no hear!! I hope you're keeping well.
I'll have a look at this activity over the weekend but in the meantime, can you please tell us which version of the route you are using (the latest is 1.7.0, released in June 2024) and which version of Open Rails you are running.
Thanks.
Cheers,
Ged
EDIT : Thought I'd look at it this evening!
What an excellent activity - I stopped at the Haxby signal, the banker coupled successfully and we set off to Misterton. Stopped just before the station and uncoupled the banker, which toddled off on its own and I continued towards Beckingham where I am now waiting to be passed by a passenger train. I'd forgotten how good this route looks - thanks for reporting a problem!! To get to that, I'm using v1.7.0 of the route with v1.5.1 of Open Rails, so I'm hoping you can tell me you're using different versions because it's worked fine for me, up to now!!

Hi Peter,as you are approaching Haxey you should see your Banker on the LHS, a local Passenger Train should also be visible.
You did remember to pull right up to the Departure Signal to ensure your Tail end has cleared the points..
As Ged has said this is a wonderful addition for OR, so I hope you get it working.
Dropping off the Banker.

Hi,
I have now successfully completed the activity
I thought I was taking my time but I completed it in 1hr 36min 41secs against the estimated time of 1hr 45mins, so I think I did quite well!!
Peter, please let us know of your success, or otherwise. If you're still having a problem, we may be able to see where things are going wrong.
Cheers,
Ged

Lincoln Coal act problem
Hi Ged,
I'm having problems resuming the Lincoln Coal activity after a save. I'm getting the "IndexOutOfRangeException. Index was outside of bounds of the array" message before I can even move off!
This is on a fresh install of the route today from Github.
I've tried uploading a screenshot and the OR log with this message ( both zipped ) but the site tells me the files exceed the storage capacity, even though both are well under the 3mb quoted.
Regards,
Nick.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Sorry, but you can't attach anything to posts here - we all get the same size message. I mentioned it to Justin some time ago but there's no progress yet.
If you want to include an image in your post, use the 'Insert Image' icon - 15th towards the left from right hand end.
Over the 30/31 Aug., I ran the Lincoln Coal activity, taking 6 saves altogether. Obviously, I used one when resuming on 31st! I've just successfully resumed from a different save.
I used v1.5.1 of Open Rails and v1.7.0 of MidEast Coast. All stock is as supplied. Maybe you've changed some stock, or an element of the route, between taking the save and resuming.
Does the log show anything amiss?
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Thanks for responding Ged. I'm using the stable OR version and the latest ME Coast version from Github downloaded this morning and with nothing changed. It seems to be a problem I'm unique in having - Anytime I run an activity using swb wagons I have problems when resuming, but activities using bogie stock are fine which means UK goods acts are a no-no.
Luckily I have plenty of US routes to run so I think it's just something I have to live with in train simming world..
Thanks for the tip regarding attaching images to posts. Below is the relevant copy and pasted part of the log in case it helps but I'm not expecting miracles.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Thanks, but, unfortunately, the part of the log you've included would only be of use to somebody who has intimate knowledge of the Open Rails program!!
The actual data causing the error might have been reported in that part of the log between the listing of the route, path and consist and the part you included.
You said that you're using the Stable version of OR although that part of the log seems to imply you're using the Unstable version, but I could be interpreting it incorrectly!
Cheers,
Ged

Yes you're quite right I was on the wrong version. Apologies for the confusion. Ok here's the complete OR log just in case something jumps out at you and solves the mystery.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Your last post seems to include a full log but the error message is totally different to the one you posted previously!
This time, you seem to be running the Stable version (Version = 1.5.1 Build = 0.0.8366.40920 (2022-11-27 22:44:00Z).
Unfortunately, the message doesn't help identify the actual problem. It may be within one of the stock items but as the activity only uses stock included with the route and I have no such problem, I have no idea what it can be!
Have you made any changes to the default stock, even to the files in an OpenRails sub-folder ?
Cheers,
Ged
EDIT : Looking closely at the error message, the final (ie top) line of the thread is :
at Orts.Simulation.Traveller..ctor(TrackSectionsFile tSectionDat, TrackNode[] trackNodes, BinaryReader inf) in C:\Jenkins\jobs\Open Rails
This appears to refer to the tsection.dat file. Did you change that between initially running the activity and attempting to resume from a save?

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Ged,
I hadn't noticed the error message had changed to be honest. No, absolutely nothing has been changed or added/deleted to the route since I downloaded it again this morning.
I've had this problem with error messages on several UK routes which only seem to occur whenever swb wagons are involved. It's obviously a problem with my setup somewhere as I've never seen any complaints from any other users.
I can still run acts involving swb wagons in the player consist - It just means I have to run the activity in one go and pause if necessary, rather than save and resume.
Anyway many thanks as always for your help Ged.
Regards,
Nick

Latest Mid East Coast Download
Hi Ged thanks, hope you are also keeping well but so far i am having no joy with the banking loco in this activity i am running the same versions of you both in the Route and Open Rails but after stopping at Haxey Staion just short of the exit signal and making sure the the train is clear of the of the rear points the banking loco reverses through the platform and then disappears into Haxey banker siding in the distance, then i wait for quite a while but it never appears to reconnect.I must be doing something wrong but i have no idea what, just about ready to give up.Thanks again.Peter.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
That doesn't make much sense!!
However, I notice, from your log, that you have : DataLogPerformance = True
Mine is set to 'False' - it could be that yours is choking the program with messages, particularly regarding swb wagons.
I suggest that you change yours to 'False' and retry resuming the activity. It might not be the answer, but it's all I can, logically, suggest at the moment!
Also, you've got ActWeatherRandomizationLevel set to 1 - mine is 0 (zero). Yours might be creating extra performance messages.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Peter,
The banker should come out of its siding and, gently, couple up to the back of the Player consist, as Roger showed in his screenshot.
I have no idea what you could be doing wrong!
AH - I've just had a lightbulb moment !! If you see the banker reversing through the station and going back into its siding, then I think you're running very late !! You should have stopped at the Haxey signal at about 13:25.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Ged,
I've just tried again with the data logging off and now have a different error message! (too many bytes)
This is at least providing me with a certain amount of entertainment

Nick

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Well, that's certainly one I've never seen before!!
These are my initial thoughts -
(a) The only place in a .eng file which contains binary values is the Lights section. Are you absolutely certain that you haven't changed the lights parameter values on any loco used in this activity? This may be in the 'normal' .eng file or in the OpenRails sub-folder.
(b) A 'glitch' could have occurred in your system when you were taking the save, which means the data wasn't stored correctly.
Are you still selecting to 'Resume' from the same save taken before this problem started?
If so, I suggest that you delete all the saves for this activity and start it from the beginning again.
If it runs OK, try taking a save, then resume from it. If it still works OK, continue with the activity until you reach the point where the 'problem save' was taken and save this run. Try resuming from it.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Ged,
Yes that error message is a new one on me too!
To answer your questions: Nothing has been changed on the route. I did a fresh download of it yesterday morning then tried a save and resume on the activity immediately.
I think the 'glitch' theory whilst saving is the most likely. It's puzzling though as it ONLY occurs if swb wagons are present in the player consist. I've run hundreds of activities on various routes of which 95% are N American so have bogie freight wagons and there's never any problem when resuming a save. Whereas on any UK route with activities involving swb wagons in a player consist I always have a problem.
As a final note, all the saves and resumes were 'fresh' ones - once a resume failed I deleted it and started again with a new save.
Anyway many thanks for your patience and help. I've a feeling I'm going to have to stick with US routes!
Regards
Nick

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
That doesn't make much sense! SWB wagons are common-place on UK routes and I've never heard of them causing any problems when running both MSTS and OR routes with Open Rails.
Comparing our OR Logs, there are 27 different settings but only 10 which might have an effect. The list is shown below :
I've marked those that I'm pretty sure aren't relevant with an 'x', but I don't know what OSDCarsState is!!
Cheers,
Ged
EDIT: Apologies!! To add an image to a post, you should use the 'Host an Image' icon, which is 16th in from the right hand side, NOT the 15th, for which you have to give a URL!

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
THAT'S IT!!! You've cracked it Ged I changed nearly all the entries you kindly highlighted where our settings differed and no more crash when resuming using either v1-5-1 or the latest New Year v155. Later I'll put them all back to the original settings one by one until I get a crash again and can thus narrow it down.
I totally take your point about the swb wagons but nevertheless the problems were only occurring for me when these were in a player consist.
Anyway a thousand thanks for all your hard work - I can (hopefully) now enjoy several UK routes that were previously almost unusable.
Regards,
Nick

Hi Ged,
Found it! "Simple Controls and Physics" was the culprit....
That'll teach me to try and take the easy way out when driving a loco.
Thanks again.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Very pleased you've located the source of the problem!
I can confirm your findings - it seems that the problem is in the 'Save' function and not the 'Resume' function.
Evidence
I changed the setting of Simple Controls & Physics to 'True' and selected 'resume' for a save taken a couple of days ago. It worked OK.
I then started the activity from the start and saved after 5 minutes. Restarted OR and selected 'resume' from that save. 'Fatal error' message was displayed with the log showing :
Error: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Will you report the problem to the OR Team?
Cheers,
Ged

Yes I will definitely point out our findings on the Elvas Tower site. Can I ask if the activity you mentioned is using swb wagons in the player consist?

Nick

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
The player uses the 'normal' BR hopper wagons. They do have a longer wheelbase than the older wagons. How have you identified that SWB wagons are the cause of the problem?
I've done some more tests and the 'fatal error' message is also displayed when using ORNYMG v155 and OR Testing vT.1.5.1-947 although the actual message is different in each case -
Stable - Object reference not set to an instance of an object
Testing - Unable to read beyond the end of the stream
MG155 - Index is outside bounds of array
Before anything is reported, I think we need to identify, as closely as possible, what stock is causing the problem. I'm going to do some more tests and will come back.
Cheers,
Ged

Understood. I'll await your findings - Mine so far are that it only seemed to be swb wagons that affected my installation.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Interim Report (!)
It's the brakevan which is causing the problem.
Tried the following :
1. loco and tender - no problem
2. loco and tender and brakevan - fatal error
3. loco and tender and one hopper wagon - no problem
4. loco and tender and full rake of hopper wagons - no problem
5. as 4. plus MSTS brakevan from MidEast Plus - fatal error.
6. as 4. plus a duplicate of the last hopper wagon (to check if it's the number of wagons) - no problem
7. as 4. plus unfitted version of OR brakevan - fatal error
8. as 4. plus unfitted version of MEP MSTS brakevan - fatal error.
Tomorrow, I'll see if I can find a different brakevan (I think the MEP and MEC versions are basically the same model).
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Ged,
Good to know you're managing to track down the problem. I always wondered if it was something to do with the braking system? I remember having a problem with Making Tracks 'London and South East' route - The 'Redhill to Norwood Departmental' activity starts with a loco picking up 3 htv wagons (no brake van) and I used to get a crash if saving and resuming after I'd coupled up. I'll see if I can find the cd.
Regards,
Nick

Hi Ged,
Please ignore the reference to the LSE route in my last post - Upon double checking I find that all works ok with no errors. BUT..... have you tried the MEC's 'Brake Van Special' activity? The player loco picks up a consist of nothing but brake vans and yet I can save and resume with 'Simple Controls and Physics' ticked... The mystery deepens.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
I have now tried the Brakevan Special activity. Your result is particularly odd because I get a different 'fatal error' (The path is not of a legal form) !!
Going back to the LincolnCoal activity ....
I changed the brake van for a similar, but old model, from the Dorset Coast CD (!) which was from a different author. This time there was no problem resuming from a save.
Thinking it may be the model/s from that particular author (which includes D506 and D507 vehicles), I removed those from the Brakevan Special loose consist list but I still got the path fatal error.
There's a supplied consist comprising 69003 and 13 brakevans so I ran that in Explore mode. Took a save, restarted and resumed. Same fatal error.
Replaced all the brakevans with the same number of loaded hoppers (from LincolnCoal consist) and repeated the last test. This time there was no error on selecting 'resume'.
Now, I'll check all the brakevans in the Brakevan Special activity - if I can identify any others by the author of D506 and D507. If so, I'll remove them and retest.
Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged,
I realised that I'd run the test with the brake van special act this morning using autopilot - which of course overrode the fact I'd ticked the 'simple' box. Just tried it again without autopilot and get the error "Unable to read beyond the end of a stream". That's using New Year v155. Apologies for the confusion.
Regards,
Nick.
ps: Peter, My apologies for having well and truly highjacked your thread

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Peter & Nick,
@Peter : Glad you've got it sorted
@ Nick : OK mate I have to keep checking that I've set Simple Controls and Physics to the option I'm actually testing!!
Also, I'm sure it's an Open Rails problem because each version (Stable, Testing and ORNYMG) gives a different 'fatal' message!
However, I'll continue checking the brakevans just in case something comes to light, which we can put to the OR Team.
Cheers,
Ged
EDIT : All the brakevans used in the Brakevan Special activity were created by the same author!! I'll now test each one individually.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Each of the brakevans causes a 'fatal' error to be displayed when resume is selected, although the actual reason varies between "Unable to read beyond the end of the stream" and "Object reference is not set to an instance of an object".
For the D506 brakevan, I then replaced the OR version with the original MSTS version. This also caused a 'fatal error' although this time it was "Index was outside bounds of array".
From this, it certainly looks like an Open Rails problem but I have one last test to do. This may not be until tomorrow!
Cheers,
Ged

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Ged,
Not sure if this helps but I've just tried the 'Dover Goods' act on the South East Steam route and the brake van in question which causes the error when in 'Simple' mode is 'BRexSECR_Brakevan_6w'. Nor sure if this one is already on your list from your own investigating with the MEC stock.
Regards,
Nick

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Ged,
Hmm I've just tried the 'Dover Goods' act again and have discovered that I get a 'The Path Is Not Of A Legal Form' message after picking up the first rake of wagons and then saving in ' Simple' mode. This is BEFORE a brake van is involved. The act resumes correctly when not in Simple mode. I've checked it twice. This is the loose consist involved.

Re: Latest Mid East coast Download please
Hi Nick,
Apologies for the rather late reply!
The more testing I do, the more confused I get!!
The problem appears to be caused by a combination of data but it only seems to involve brakevans from a particular author.
I have checked the shape files of all the brakevans included in the 13 brakevans consist and can't see anything amiss.
I copied a loco and a D506 brakevan from MEP into MEC.
Using the MEP loco with the MEP brakevan and using the MEP loco with the MEC brakevan, no error was shown on 'Resume'.
Using the MEC loco with the MEP brakevan and the MEC loco with the MEC brakevan resulted in a 'fatal error' being shown on 'Resume' although the actual messages are different.
This would seem to point to a problem with the MEC loco (69003) but using it with a brakevan created by a different author resulted in 'Resume' operating correctly!
I don't think I can do any more, but will have a look at the details you have posted in case something else comes to light.
Cheers,
Ged
