South East locos

I'm hoping there will be a comprehensive range of new loco models released with the route when eventually it's finished. A number have already been made and there are others still waiting on a "to do" list. I'll post screenshots occasionally to provide an idea of what is likely to be included. The latest is BoB Class "Biggin Hill". This model was prompted after recently seeing a photo of the loco hauling a boat train in 1949.

In 1955, five newly built Standard 4's were allocated to Dover, 75065 was one of them..

They were still there in 1957 but moved to Bournemouth in 1960 except 75069 that went to Stewarts Lane.

Andy, it's just the camera angle, the signal post is vertical.

The little H Class could be seen all over the SouthEast working local passenger trains and occasional light goods or ECS movements - another one of my favourite locos. This model will be updated whenever I find the time.

The Schools Class were SouthEast locos for over 30 years, and could be seen on all types of passenger trains - fast, semi-fast and stopping trains. Most were painted Green in BR days but some remained black.

New diesels began to appear in Kent in 1959. The Class 33 order was delayed so a number of Class 24's were "borrowed" from the LM Region until the 33's were available in sufficient numbers. Reg Furniss has kindly allowed his model to be reskinned and used for the route and there will be at least 2 included.



Class 33's could be seen from 1960 onwards. This is a reskin of Paul Mitchell's model. Paul has also given permission for these to be included.



The SR built 3 of their own diesels in the early 1950's - 10203 hauled the Golden Arrow in 1955.

The U/U1 Class along with the N Class were the main heavy goods locos, but were often seen on passenger services too.

There were several of the little R1 Class shedded at Folkestone Junction for years, and they lasted until 1958/9 before being replaced by ex-GWR Panniers. Their main duties were to operate over the Harbour Branch and often 2 or 3 would be used in the same consist. They would also carry out carriage and wagon movements at both the Harbour and Junction Yards.

There were a few O1 Class working right to the end of SouthEast steam. They mainly worked the daily light ( around 10 wagons) coal trains bringing coal from the collieries to a yard for assembly into longer wagon trains.

The Q Class was not widely seen in the SouthEast, but there was one shedded at Tunbridge Wells West for a time. Duties would mainly be on services to and from Sussex destinations, and occasionally to and from London via Sussex.

According to my Ian Allen 1955 book the only K class in it is LBSC 2-6-0,No's 32337-53

There was a SECR K and K1 Tank loco they were named after Rivers crews called them rolling rivers due them being unstable.They were designed in 1914 but work to build them didn't start until the end of WW1.

After the Sevenoaks crash in 1927 they were rebuilt as U and U1 class loco's

No Ben. My Loco Shed book shows that they were all shedded at either Brighton or Three Bridges with one at Fratton.

I haven't seen a photo of a K in any of my SouthEast references either.

Before the war the King Arthurs - along with the Lord Nelsons and Schools Classes - were used on the fast passenger services to and from Kent, but with the introduction of the Bulleid Pacifics their work gradually reduced. There were still a handful regularly working until the end of SouthEast steam though. Most of the 2nd Series "Eastleigh" Arthurs were allocated to SouthEast sheds as they were fitted with 3500 gall "Ashford" tenders which were suited to the region. A couple are shown here - Sir Cador of Cornwall and the delightfully named Sir Dodinas le Savage!

Yet another 2 fine loco's for your route,there is just 1 loco class and also one of my favourite loco's that is sadly lacking in MSTS is the Lord Nelson class,were they still in use on the SE Division,in the era your route is set in or had they been transferred to the SW Division by then.

Hi Mike,

Until 1940 there were around 12 LN's shedded at Stewarts Lane for the Boat Trains to Dover and also express workings to Ramsgate. With the Continental traffic suspended and travel into Kent discouraged during the war, all LN's were transferred to the Western Section by 1940.  After the war the MN's headed the Boat Trains and were gradually supported by the Light Pacifics.

A couple of Rebuilt Light Pacifics...usually seen on Boat Train duties, but would also head services to and from Ramsgate when needed.

Looking good Danny, but you do know that Bulleids can handle more stock than that don't you?

Andy, my Trainset folders are now very limited - no BATS stock for instance - in preparation for eventual compilation of stock for the route. When testing and screenshotting I just make a quick consist to get the job done, so you'll probably see all sorts of unlikely things that are not important at this stage. Maybe I should just have shown the locos running light engine... 

I was only joking mate. Your route continues to impress and 1 I am certainly looking forward to.. Your Bulleids look fab as well, especially with the coal on the tender!! Certainly realistic as what they did at Nine Elms, filling them as much and as high as they could. Any other progress updates of what your doing on the route? Always interested to see and read about.

Building the final station now - Westenhanger. Still another 4 SB's to model - I think there's around 20 in the route and virtually each one has been different. Folkestone Racecourse is alongside Westenhanger Station - there were a couple of Racecourse platforms there, so there's footbridges to do and then Grandstands etc to consider, as well as the racetrack and surrounds.

I'll be the one to ask then!

Definately not! My reasoning is that it's only used a few days of the year therefore the odds are you'll likely to be driving by on a non-race day.

Over a period there were 3 regular West Country Class visitors to Portsmouth when I was a youngster - Crewkerne, Boscastle and Chard. I have fond memories of those times so I was delighted to come across a photo recently showing Chard at Victoria on a Kent duty during 1949. This was just the prompt I needed for the model...

Martin Pope has given permission for his excellent Q1 model to be included with the route. The " Flying Dustbin " was widely seen in Kent and at one period there were 10 engines allocated to Tonbridge Shed. Mainly they were freight locos, but were often used on passenger services particulary at week-ends and holiday periods when traffic was at a peak. These shots show a Redhill to Tonbridge service.

This is the latest model for SouthEast - an E1 Class. Although still unfinished, the route is now being tested but completion isn't anticipated until some time next year.

That E1 looks fab! And don't forget those DEMU's that I agreed to let you renumber for when the Route does come out!  
Better late than never! I've got the patience of a god and I am sure it will be spectacular and I think I speak for everyone when I say we can't wait!

This is the D1 - in clean condition but there'll be a couple of weathered ones too. Similar to the E1 but not identical. Some lasted until 1962 after being transferred away from the SouthEast.

It doesn't really matter what your first attempts look like Alec, the main thing is that you're learning TSM and the techniques. The quality of models gradually gets better as you gain experience. Just be pleased that you've managed to make something and then move on to the next one.....you'll be surprised how quickly your work improves.

I echo Danny's comments! I'm sure it will look absolutely fine! Post some screenshots of how you are progressing with it in Shapeviewer and TSM and we can all see how well you are doing....
