My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hello everyone.
I have windows 7 Home, my graphics card is a Navidia (Have I spelt that right?) 9400GT, Despite extensive searching I cannot locate the file that gives me the information.
I used to know where to find things on Windows XP but this windows 7 is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
When I open 1MSTS, the following message appears.
Microsoft Train Simulator has detected that your graphics hardware may be lacking essential features that it needs to run Please ensure that the latest drivers from your graphics card manafactures website.
Now, Both SDJR and MId east plus mini routes run just fine, which suggests that it is something to do with 1MSTS that is at fault, I am very loathed to have to do a re install as I usually fall foul of MSTS Bin.
I have a suspicion that my computer may be running slow, I have never really been able to work out other than disc cleanup and defragmenter what program I need to use and as for downloading and install any devices for the graphics card. Well that is totally beyond my capability.
Any help and advice from you experts would be most helpful
Cheers
Andy

Andy, you don't say if there is a route that doesn't open.....However, if you can open Mid East Plus OK - which is a monster route - then it would suggest your MSTS setup is OK. My inclination would be to ignore the message.

Hi Andy,
As Danny has said, if big routes like MEP run OK, then there's not much wrong.
Although it should run automatically, I suggest you run mprofile.exe - it's in your 1MSTS folder. You won't see much, just a short flash of a box on the screen. Then try to rerun MSTS.
Cheers,
Ged

Just done that and it did not work, What I should have explained was that 1MSTS does not launch at all, Only get this message about the graphic card lacking hardware.
Cheers
Andy
Edit Should also mention that despite de fragmenting, my computer is running slow.

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hi Andy,
Have you installed drivers for your graphics card? - the latest suitable for the 9400GT is 341.44
Have you seen this? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/299690
Also, here : http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=273&t=126379&start=15&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
or even here, the other Andy had the same message : https://tsforum.forumotion.net/t780-midhants-railway-watercressline-route#10705
You're not using a "Virtual Machine" are you? - that seems to be the cause of the problem in those last two links.
Cheers,
Ged

Sorry Ged.
All of the above links are as clear as mud, What is a virtual machine please? I do not know and would not even attempt to download and install drivers I do not have a clue how to!
The fact that I can run both miniroutes SDJR and Mideast plus without problems and also I am in the process of editing and photoshopping my photos from the 6 week trip
to New Zealand earlier this year so I would need the graphics card for that.
As a result from the above, I have hardly touched 1MSTS over the last two or three months, should I re-install it again because I don't think the problem is the graphics card.
I cannot launch either MSTS or MSTS editors and tools, up to now I have never had any problems.
Cheers
Andy

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hi Andy,
The first link, to the Microsoft site, is your best starting point.
Just follow the instructions 1, 2, 3 & 4 and see if you get any improvement.
If not, I suggest a re-installation would probably be best, but you don't have to lose whatever is already in 1MSTS - please come back.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hi Andy,
You don't need to access MSTS or the Editors & Tools to do what is suggested on the Microsoft webpage!
It just plain Windows, from the Start button!
.... and I don't understand why you've removed MEP as it was working OK!!

Ged

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Some of these virus scanner/clean up utilities have a "remove duplicate files and empty folders option" unfortunately MSTS won't work without its duplicate files and (if you use trainstore) empty folders.
I selected that option once and had loads of missing file errors, so I had to copy loads of files and folders from my backup MSTS installation, which fortunately was on an external drive and wasn't butchered by the cleanup operation, since then I've disabled that particular option when doing a PC cleanup.

HI Mark,
Thanks for the explanation
I would never select those options! If I did, I might have a nice clean, fast PC, but I wouldn't be able to do anything!!

No Ged, I did not remove MEP at all! That was what I found when I opened up the computer this morning, Yes it certainly was working OK last night.
All I have on the desktop is the option to delete the shortcuts but in my Drive C MEP is still present.
Im sorry but I cannot find this start button you mention above.
I am in the process of moving my essential documents to my hard drive for storage pending the inevitable trip to the computer repair shop.
I would like to uninstall 1MSTS and re-install it from the discs, but I am doubtful if I will be able to.
Cheers
Andy
Edit: Just to make sure, This is the section you refer to?
"To identify the name, manufacturer and model of your video adapter:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
Click the Display or Display 1 tab.
Under Device, note the name of your video card on the Name line and note the manufacture of your video card on the Manufacture line. Under Drivers, note the version number on the Version line.
If multiple video adapters are installed in your computer, repeat steps 3-4 to determine the names, manufactures, and version number of the video driver for each additional video adapter installed in your computer.
When you have noted the names, manufactures, and version numbers for all of the video drivers installed on your computer, click Exit."
There is a link to microsoft but it no longer works!

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hi Andy,
The Start button in in the extreme bottom left corner of your Desktop. If your Taskbar is hidden, move the cursor to the bottom of the screen to bring it into view.
No, you've got the wrong Microsoft page! The one I linked to shows this :
Just follow from "Click Start", don't worry about the bit before it.
From what you've reported, ie MEP was working OK, I doubt if your PC needs to be taken to the repair shop. However, if you do and you want them to re-install MSTS, emphasise that it MUST NOT be installed into C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86)!!
Cheers,
Ged

Some of the issues below can be resolved with updated drivers or by upgrading your hardware. After updating or upgrading it is important that you use the Train Simulator Troubleshooter to reprofile your new hardware and drivers. To do this follow the steps below:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Games, point to Train Simulator, and then click Train Simulator Troubleshooter.
Click Change Video Driver.
Click OK.
Click Play Train Simulator.
Just follow from "Click Start", don't worry about the bit before it.

Hi Ged.
I cannot find any other link than http://supportmicrosoft.com/en-us/kb/299690 Is the right one and if so where should I be looking?
The other two links take me to UKTS Neither of which make any sense to me.
I have managed to click on the start button but cannot get to the troubleshooter as I get this graphic card warning message.
Cheers

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hi Andy,
Don't worry about the Microsoft site, because I quoted the relevant parts in my last post.
Also, don't worry about the other links because they refer to the use of a Virtual Machine, which you know nothing about.
You can obviously use other programs OK because you are posting here. What, exactly, are you doing when the graphics card message appears?
It doesn't make sense that you can't use the Start button!
Just before it started to go wrong, had you installed anything new? If so, what was it?
It might be worth checking if you've got a recent System Restore. Systems are very often set up to take dumps whenever anything system-wise is installed, like Windows Update. If you are lucky, you might have one; if you don't know how to check :
1. Click the Start button
2. Right click on Computer (in right hand panel)
3. Left click on Properties
4. Left click on System Protection (top left of display)
5. Left click on the System Restore button
6. The next screen will show the latest System Restore, if there is one, with "Recommended restore" selected. If it is today, ignore it, because your problems started yesterday or before (didn't they?).
7. Left click on "Choose another restore point", then click on the "Next" button.
8. If there are any more System Restores, they will be displayed.
9. If you've got one a couple of days old, left click on it to highlight it, then click on the "Next" button.
10. There's one more press to go, but before you do, save any files you're working on, then click on the "Finish" button. Let Windows do the necessary and don't switch off until you get the confirmation that the Restore is complete.
Cheers,
Ged

Re: My 1MSTS has stopped working.
Hi Ged.
This is what I have been up to, System restore back to 8th June 1623 Hrs and yes MEP now works
Run Miccklesfield Hull Trans Penine unit Rather an unusual amount of "Stuttering" (I have run this activity before) but made it to Selby OK.
Was going to post results, but HORRORS Fatal Error messages on this site and email
"The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the event log(?!?) or use the command line SXStrace exc tool
for more detail".
UM.....Yes....... : Well I didn't do that.....A system unrestore and phew emails/TSSH etc work again.
Think I am going to leave MSTS1 alone when I take the tower back to the repair shop..
Question Is it graphics card, Motherboard or hard drive. I will mention that if the graphics card needs replacing (I have had it since 2008 when the computer was built.)
It has to be another Navidia.
Dam it more expence I suppose:roll:
Anyway thanks for your help will report back later.
Cheers

Hi Andy,
Well, I've never seen that "side by side" error message before! I still think it's some software on your PC which is causing it, but have no idea what it can be - I wonder if Andy Cook, being a professional, is able to contribute anything?
Cheers,
Ged
