British Rail Class 210 Units.
Hi all,
Not sure if anyone has come across these, but they were the first Generation Class 317 EMU's... Odd looking don't you think? I've only been told about these 2 units today!

Hi Andy,
There's one Class 210 in the UKTS library (File ID 18070) by GlasgowWorks (Alistair Cowell), v4 issued in Feb this year.
Cheers,
Ged

The Class 210 was a prototype DEMU of which two were built circa 1981 and were withdrawn in the late 1980s.
Parts of them were used in the Networker (Class 457) development programme. Some of the cars may have been used in the Class 455 sets?

I got to travel on both of them as they were based out of Reading and went through Slough a lot.

Re: British Rail Class 210 Units.
I've heard that they were a lot more comfortable and more of a smooth ride compared to a Thumper? Is this true Niall?

How dare you say such a thing. Blasphemy!
They certainly rode better than the usual 117, because they were a good few years old at that point. But a thumper? Never!
Seating was like your 317s, 455s of that era, so the thumper's old-style seating would always be superior.
What I can remember is that the 4-car version was very LOUD, but having looked at Wiki just now, I'm not surprised as it had a Paxman engine.
As nice as it was seeing them on the line, give me a 207 any day (and I highly recommend the one at Spa Valley -- when it's working!)

Although apparently they are compared to an HST and with 2 different engines either end???? (I don't understand this unless it was for experimental purposes with engines?)
I have a massive soft spot for Thumpers being an ex-Midhants man! The Midhants one is doing exceptionally well! As for the Spa Valley, I'm only just up the road! ;-) (Literally 5/10 mins away from Eridge!!!!

Not keen on green, hence I prefer Spa Valley's nice Blue-Grey effort!
As for 210, I know each unit had a different engine, but unless I'm mistaken the engine was only at one end, like a thumper.

Re: British Rail Class 210 Units.
If you live close to the Spa Valley; love to meet up for a day of Photography with you! I quite like most Liveries myself. But I have to say the SR green is my favourite with all old stock! Bulleid man through and through! I'm out early part of November just down the road to see the second ever Steam loco railtour come through Crowborough with 34046 and 1 of 2 Black 5's.... Trouble is no one is sure if they will be top'n'tailed yet or whether the black 5 will be behind Braunton?NiallGray wrote:Not keen on green, hence I prefer Spa Valley's nice Blue-Grey effort!

Also it doesn't show the dirt as much!!
