Error Reading Train Database File Empty Error Reading Train Database File

Post  35005CP Mon 01 Apr 2013, 10:37 pm

Hi all,
After a reinstall of my Laptop and copying the trains directory back across, I am getting the above error. For the life of me I can't remember what might be causing all these errors when the .eng files etc exist?
I am using Trainstore to store all routes apart from the one I want to work on which is Dorset Coast.
I hope someone can refresh my memory. I have Tsection42uk installed into the Globals folder.
Many Thanks
Best Wishes

Hi Andy,
Sorry, mate, but that's a bit like "how long's a piece of string?"!!

The database errors may be produced by some consists being present, but their stock being hidden by Train Store. Unlikely, I know, but it depends on what state the folders were in, Train Store-wise, when you copied them over. It may be better to unstore everything, then start again.

I don't think the tsection.dat file will have any effect on this type of error.

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged,
Thanks for the reply mate. Is there anyway I can use Route Riter to see which consists and Trainsets are not being used by Routes/Activities so that I can move these across elsewhere? (I hope you can see what I am getting at; if we are on the same Lines?)
Cheers

Obviously you can use Route Riter to check routes, acts for routes, eng files, etc. I also believe that you can use RR to remove unwanted stock, etc.; at least I remember looking at doing that myself some time ago. However I would need to look at my stuff at home this evening, assuming my aging brain is not playing tricks on me, which is quite possible!

Run Route Riter - Activities/Stock.
Press Check all Activities.

At the bottom of the page press Unused Services Consists.

You can then right click on the items and choose Delete or Move.

Move will create a folder in the relevant activity file folder and move the file into it, hiding it from MSTS.

The only way I've managed to move unused stock out of the main MSTS installation (after using Route_Riter to move unused consists aside, as described by Ian) is to move all stock to a temporary folder and then run the Activity-Analysis "Check All Consists" and "Check All Static Models" routines and move back into the MSTS installation the folders that A-A flags as missing.

(Even though in A-A you can sort the missing stock alphabetically by folder name, the sort order is a bit different from the sort order in the Windows folder list.)

Bob.

Thanks Ian for the help. I have done as you have suggested and moved those files that aren't used, but still getting the same problem.... Could it be down to the amount of .eng and .wag files as it seems Conbuilder is being fussy; so couldn't Activity Editor when I choose all stock (To enable me to create a new consist on another Activity I am wanting to do)
Many Thanks

How unfortunate that you are having to do this. Two thoughts have subsequently occurred to me:-
1. When transferring your TRAINS folder back onto the new laptop, did you check that the permissions were OK. I have found in the past that the permissions do not always match in this situation - in my case when copying stored Route folders.
2. With respect to ConBuilder it's worth noting that I believe there is an upper limit on the number of ENG files that it can load, namely 10,000! Now whilst that seems large we all know that Trainsets can grow exponentially!

Hi Alec,
I am about 90% sure that I did check the permissions, but I can't be 100%. Too late now anyway. I have kept the old Trainset folder elsewhere just incase I need anything.
As for the Conbuilder issue, do you know if the paid version can deal with more .eng and .wag files than it states?
Cheers

I have the paid and fully updated version of conbuilder installed, this is what it says in the help file....................

Program limitations

This program is capable of building consists up to 150 units.

The limit for existing locomotives is 15000 and the limit for wagons is 30000.

The limit for routes is 2000+.

The limit for activities is 1000 for each route installed and 4000 services.

The limit for loose consists is 2000 with a length of 150 items.

Limit for Random Consists is 150.

The list for tested files is capable of storing 32766 items each. For sound files this limit can be short if you have more than 200 locomotives and choose to test all of them. It's advisable to divide the locos by groups and test each group one by one. If you choose to test all, as soon as the tested files list gets to the maximum number, the contents of this list will be cleared and the list will start over again.

NOTE:
There are probably some things that have a less or greater limit than expressed above.
