Sounds for a Webb compound
I have nearly finished a (narrow gauge) Webb 3 cylinder compound and am wondering if anyone has any ideas on sounds for such a loco; the essential problem is that there are only 2 beats per revolution and all the existing work I have come across is for 2 or 4 cylinder (4 beats apart from the SR Lord Nelson) or 3 cylinder (6 beats). I have watched some videos on YouTube of the Zillertalbahn no 3, which is a 2 cylinder compound and likewise has only 1 cylinder exhausting up the chimney and it certainly sounds different from the more conventional engines on the line.

Re: Sounds for a Webb compound
Hi Andrew,
Welcome to the forum.
The only thing that I can think of to slow the number of beats per revolution down would be to "un-synchronise” the sound files by going with a slower 2 cylinder sound set with the wheel radius set to be smaller to rotate faster than the beats. Try something like 2c100d with the correct wheel radius to see if that works, if the beat is slightly quick then try reducing the wheel radius to make the wheel turn quicker be faster than the sounds. I have done this by accident before so I know that it is possible.

Justin,
I'll give it a go - by the way what is 2c100d?

Andrew,
Sorry about that, it is the first part of the name for one of the 2 cylinder generic sound sets sms files.
It should give you the slowest beat possible at the standard sound level, not "deep" but not "light".

Justin,
Thanks for that - it's certainly better than any of the default sounds, and I am definitely getting fewer chuffs per revolution. I have to admit that I have never worried much about sounds before, being much more concerned with the .s file, but the defaults are clearly not right on this one.

Andrew,
I'm glad I could help. Any chance of a picture of the engine in question?
( if you need help with getting the picture up let me know)

Re: Sounds for a Webb compound
I always struggle with pictures, but lets try again
The loco was built by Robert Stephensons for the 2'-6" gauge Antofagasta & Bolivia Railway and was a 4-2-4-2t. Like the other Webb compounds built for overseas service, she was not a success and was rebuilt as a 4-6-0 tender engine, and may be the one preserved at at Pulcayo in Bolivia.
I have one remaining problem, the Joy valve gear works beautifully in 3DC but one side jerks in the sim; any ideas?

Re: Sounds for a Webb compound
Andrew,
Wow, that is one good looking engine.
It sounds like the animations might be slightly corrupt. I have had this problem myself with TSM; it has a habit of flipping the valve gear over mid animation if rotation and movement are required.
The only thing that I can suggest is going through and manually checking the animation coordinates on each part out to make sure that something hasn't gone wrong. It is time consuming and unfortunately there is not easy fix option. Chances are there is a – (minus sign) in front of a number where there shouldn’t be.
I hope this helps,
Justin

Re: Sounds for a Webb compound
Justin,
I finally solved it by copying all the animation angles from the left to the right hand side, with allowance for quartering. It didn't look any better in 3DC, but it does look right in the Sim; something more that I have learned. The loco is available for download on UKTS if anyone is interested.
