Well I've had this problem before on another Route, but today I decided to have a go on an old favourite of mine, Lo and behold it's problem time again..

Firstly I did an Act that worked great, then decided to do Act two (The London connection). All set up great,Reverser to 65,brakes released, Open Throttle, thats where it went wrong
I had only started to open the Regulator when I found myself doing in excess of 100 mph, and it wouldn't stop.

Oh well I can put that down to its a very old Sim and OR just doesn't like it. (the same thing happens on one act in Cannock Chase but all the others work.)So on to another Act,

Christmas delivery Pt 1. Works great,I'm even running to time, when about a Mile out of BNS there's a complete (with engine) Train in front of my.So having plenty of room I stop, try giving it a Nudge only to find like before I can push it all the way into New Street, Act completed 5 mins late. lol!

I'm beginning to think OR is not good for me !Problems (again,I HEAR YOU ASK. Open_r13

Hi Roger,
Using my investigative skills, I deduced you're referring to the Black Country 1 route Smile

I just started the London Connection and had the same trouble as you!  There is something wrong with 45519 and, if you're interested, I'll have a look tomorrow.

The other problem is because AI trains work differently in Open Rails to the way they do in MSTS due, mainly, to the OR development team having to do a lot of educated guessing owing to the lack of any documentation on the internal workings of MSTS.  On the whole, I think they have done, and are doing, a marvellous job, even if it does, sometimes, frustrate some of we MSTS stalwarts!!

Cheers,
Ged

EDIT : I couldn't leave it until tomorrow!
Change this line in the Engine section : CylinderDiameter ( 18 ) to CylinderDiameter ( 18in ) and you should be running normally!!
Obviously. MSTS defaults to inches, but I've no idea what OR reads it as!!

Hi Both

According to the CTN "Open Rails Steam Parameters" Steam Cylinder section states that Cylinder Stroke and Cylinder Diameter both default to meters where no UoM is specified. No wonder 45519 went fast with cylinders that size!!!

Hi Terry,
Thanks for that Smile
However, wouldn't you have thought that Open Rails is 'clever' enough to calculate that a boiler of the specified size couldn't maintain a supply of steam to such gigantic cylinders?!

Cheers,
Ged

Morning Ged

Yes it does a lot of good work for us but can't spot a HUGE cylinder at 30 paces!!!

Thank you Ged that did the trick on Black Country, it's now sorted. This led me to think on an Act from Cannock Chase that did exactly the same, and upon looking I found it was the same Loco. So that's two sorted for the price of one lol! Very Happy...Roger

There are at least three iterations of 45519 in the MSTS library:
NS_BR_Patriot_45519_BLW
CC_5XP_45519_BLW
BR_Patriot_45519_BLW
All have the same cylinder diameter of 18 and need correcting. They are of course essentially the same file renamed.

Hi Again Ged

Further to your discovery of the fault affecting CC_Patriot_45519_Black (and others) I spent a little time collating the following data from where else but the OR log, generated at run time.

The data truly shows the wild figures that the missing "in" was causing and of course the jet like acceleration of the loco.

I am not sure if your fault finding was based on inspection of the OR log but lines 1c 1e and 1g do contain some 'over the top' figures!!

There are three lines of data for each value generated as follows:-

Lines commencing with the figure 1 represent values from the original .eng file as downloaded with fault.

Lines commencing with the figure 2 represent values from the original .eng file as downloaded with fault rectified ie "in" inserted.

Lines commencing with the figure 3 represent values from the my own .eng file.

Hi Terry,
I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't use the OR Log data.  That document is so full of figures, not always directly related to entries in the .eng file, that I find it rather mind-boggling!!

I used the old-fashioned method of comparing the .eng file with that of one known to work correctly, in this case, the Flying Scotsman!  Realising that the fault must be (a) in the Engine section, but (b) not in the Engine Controllers section, because it was so similar to that of the Scotsman, I used the 'binary-chop method of sequentially replacing sections of code with the same section from the Scotsman, until I found the culprit!

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged

I had spent some time doing much the same as yourself only with my copy 45519 which I knew worked ok in OR and MSTS.
Then you posted your solution which I immediately tried and as it cured the problem set the investigation to one side. It was only after your post :-

"However, wouldn't you have thought that Open Rails is 'clever' enough to calculate that a boiler of the specified size couldn't maintain a supply of steam to such gigantic cylinders?!"

that I thought about the log file and decided to take a look to see what data the errant loco .eng file reported. Hence my last post, just as an exercise and for information that may be of interest to others.

Cheers

Terry
