Silence! Time for a clue. The following (edited) description of the scene may help:
"Note the Xxxx Pub at the extreme top right corner of the photo and the abundence of fields where there are now only houses: Xxxx grew up primarily as a result of the railway. The view dates from 1871 and shows the original set of xxxx Buildings"

Barking it was. Earls Court has an overall roof.
The latest picture is a gem. The signal box has a South Western look. Roderic

Re: Archive Guess the Location
My apologies. I have only just seen this response, It is Brighton works.
Over to you Roderic.
This photo shows the view looking across The Works looking roughly towards Hollingdean from Terminus Road. Note the Roundhill Pub at the extreme top right corner of the photo and the abundence of fields where there are now only houses: Brighton grew up primarily as a result of the railway. The view dates from 1871 and shows the original set of Works Buildings, which were consequently expanded and dramatically added to in later years as the facilities attempted to outgrow the constraints of the site.
Over to you Roderic.

Re: Archive Guess the Location
Not Victoria. Have a look at the shape of the carriage roofs. They will give you the right Railway.

Re: Archive Guess the Location
Is it Paddington as those carriages could be Hawksworth's, although I couldn't see a bear anywhere or the Browns come to that?

No, not Paddington.
An American soldier in the war said it was the nearest place to Hell he had ever been.
John Betjeman said it had the calm of an ancient abbey.

Re: Archive Guess the Location
Yes, it is dear, smoky old Liverpool Street: the main line platforms. The train and the luggage in the picture might be bound for Harwich for the Hook of Holland.
Over to you.

Re: Archive Guess the Location
Clue time,
We are within the geographical area covered by NWE here
<Edit> Next clue... the station closed in 1964, but the line limped on as goods only for another four years.

Re: Archive Guess the Location
I should say it is an ex LNW line, but that is as near as I can get. Midland would have diagonal fencing. It could just as easily be L & Y or Furness. Roderic

Re: Archive Guess the Location
Sorry Terry, I posted 'Barking' in reply to the picture of Barking - I was behind the times I didn't realise we were now on page two - Doh. Pity because I knew Liverpool Street as well. Need to be a bit more astute if I am to play with the Big Boys!

Re: Archive Guess the Location
OK, Time for another clue..
There is a signal in the background, which denotes a junction.
The line signalled by the left hand junction closed earlier, in 1952.
