Hi,
Well my computer

Looks like my original post didn't show up,well my computer has given up the ghost,so I will have to get a new one but it will have to be a windows 8-1.
I have seen one in my price range,it has Intel Celeron processor and Intel HD 4400 Graphic card,will I be able to run msts with this computer

From what I remember of Geds experiments, the answer is no.

There are options to still get a new computer with W7. This is one site: http://www.powerc.com/

I did a quick pick of one of their base models that would easily run MSTS and it came out at £700 with W7 installed. There were cheaper options. That doesn't include monitor, speakers, keyboard etc. but I would have thought you could easily use your existing ones.

Yes, Clive is correct! The Intel 4400 graphics is the problem, although they are not quite so bad as AMD graphics systems!
I know MSTS is a very old program, but I don't think you'd be happy with a Celeron processor. The Intel Pentium Anniversary Edition processor would be a better bet; I believe at least one of our fellow simmers is running one - I think it's the G3258. Hopefully they will see this and respond.

If you are stuck with Windows 8.1, only NVIDIA graphics card will work correctly, but I'd recommend NOT going for an entry level card (second digit 2 or 3).

Hi Mike.
Just a suggestion, but would it not be cheaper for you to have one built for you, This is what I did in 2009 with windows XP home.
Last year I had it upgraded to Windows 7, I expect some of you will remember me getting help to re-install MSTS on it.
It certainly worked for me so I would suggest you look at all options Mike.

I agree with Andrew.
I use Novatech for my computer supplies; they can build one to your specifications or just supply the components. They still have W7 in stock. If you phone them the staff are always knowledgeable and very helpful. There are probably other companies that will do the same, as Clive has suggested.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy a new hard drive for my computer as the old one burnt out,would I also have to get windows 7 again or is it stored some where else on the computer

Hi Mike.
Thats what happened to my computer, the HD went. There must be someone in the Peterborough area that can repair your computer and replace your hard drive.
My computer shop in Bournemouth were also able to rescue the stuff I had on my HD. so I did not loose anything.

Hi Mike,

As someone who has also had a HD failure ( mine went just before Xmas ) I was very grateful that I had more than HD, as my computer made regular restore points on a different drive. Once I'd installed the new HD all I had to do was use the latest recovery point and everything was up an running again with hardly anything lost and without anything else having to be re-installed.

If you buy a new HD you should be able to install W7 onto it if you still have the original disc.

Thanks for the replies had a look at replacement hard drives and I think they will be the route to take,unfortunately it will be a couple of weeks before I m up and running,as I'm laid up again this time water on the knee,I can hardly walk

Sorry just a quick question do I need to reload windows 7 or will system restore do that?

I hope you knee gets better soon as it does sound very painful.

In my case C drive crashed, but the restore point was on E drive. Once the new C drive was fitted I inserted my W7 disc expecting to do a full install but up came a message "Did I want to use a system restore point?" ( or words to that effect ). I clicked "yes" and a little while later all was back to normal - very simple! It also proved to me the advantage of having more than one HD.
If you're restore point was on the now defunct drive then I assume that that you will have to reload W7 and everything else that was on that drive. If I'm wrong then I'm sure the more knowledgeable and expert others will correct me.

If so, are you sure the other PC's hard drive is at fault?  What are the symptoms?
If not, then the PC would seem to be still running!

Have you considered the possibility that it is the monitor that has failed? When you switch the computer on can you hear the normal "whirring" and "grring"?

... and lights flashing?!

I don't think its the screen as there is a picture of sorts and coloured lines showing,sorry I didn't get back before but been in hospital
