Headcode Discs Empty Headcode Discs

Post  35005CP Fri 11 Apr 2014, 6:31 pm

Hi all,

I have a question that I am finding somewhat confusing. Please can someone tell me how to change the "discs dead" & discs Live in Danny's Merchant Navy folders around so that the disc's appear differently?

In the discs live folder I have disc1, disc2, disc3 and disk5.ace
In the discs dead folder I have disc4 and disc6.ace
In the main loco folder there again are all the above .ace files??
But, I have read the readme and I am just getting confused.

I hope someone can help and put it to me in layman's Terms.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,
I should really leave it to Danny, or someone who knows more, than I do!  But I'll carry on!!

You have two folders, Discs Live and Discs Dead.  Each folder has files with the same name, BUT they are not the same!  Your problem seems to be that in your Live folder, you don't have Discs 4 and 6 and, likewise, in your Dead folder you don't have Discs 1, 2, 3 and 5.  As far as I can make out, you should have all 6 discs in each folder; these are then COPIED (not moved) into the main loco folder, as required (see below).

I haven't checked the readme, but I would think that there is a chart to identify the position each Disc number occupies on the front of the loco.  You will then determine the pattern of discs you require, based on the chart, which will then show which should be "dead" (ie invisible) and which should be "live" (ie showing).

If you don't have 6 of each disc, I suggest you re-install the loco from the original download Smile  BUT, see my edit below.

Cheers,
Ged

EDIT : I've now looked at Danny's 35002 and you are quite right in that only 4 & 6 are in the Dead folder and 1,2,3 and 5 in the Live folder!  However, the instructions state to CUT the file from the appropriate folder and PASTE it into the main folder.  There is no mention of maintaining 6 in each folder, just that there should be 6 in the main folder.  This is OK if you never wanted to change the discs from one configuration to another, but I think the whole purpose of this facility is to be able to change them at will!  Follow the instructions and after 3 or 4 changes, you'd end up with no discs in either folder!!  I noticed that Danny's WC locos do have 6 lamps in each of the Dead/Live folders, and that the instructions have been changed to COPY instead of cut.

Hi Ged,
Well now I am truly and 100% confused. Hopefully Danny can shine some light on this one? Also where is Disc1, Disc2, Disc,3, Disc4 etc on the chart?

Sorry for the confusion - I'll try to explain...

If you look at the Disks Live ( shows White disc), Disks Dead (no White disc showing) and main folder you have a total of 12 discs - 6 Live and 6 Dead. It follows that if you have 6 Live discs in the main folder then the loco would show 6 white headcode discs - the Disks Live folder would be empty and the Disks Dead folder would have 6 files included.

It's useful to note that the Disk file sizes are different - the Dead Disks being 9.56KB and the Live Disks 3.17KB

Assuming a 2 disc Headcode is needed then, from the full 6 white disc headcode arrangement described above, you would need to remove 4 Live disks from the main folder ( place them in the Disks Live folder) and substitute 4 corresponding Dead disks (from the Disks Dead folder).

The reason for this is that the loco shape file has 6 discs included, and is always looking for 6 textures namely disk1. ace to disk6.ace - it doesn't matter that 4 of these textures have been alpha'd out.

If users can't be bothered using Headcodes then they just need to keep the 6 Disks Dead in the main folder.

Hi Andy
If you have got Dannys 35004,that has all six files in both disks dead and disks live folders, just copy and paste them into the loco's that haven't got all six in their folders.

I think I've worked it out
Waterloo- Southampton Terminus uses 3 position

Bournemouth Central-Brockenhurst Via Ringwood uses 2 position

Waterloo Bournemouth Weymouth Passenger uses 4&6 so you can do that train

In a book I have there are 30 different SR headcode positions

Top 1
Middle 2&3
Botom buffer beam 4 5 6

Thanks Danny and Mike,
I have used Danny's 35004 as a template so to speak on 35007, but the file sizes are different to the ones Danny has said...

Discs Live = 42.2kb (In total) - 7.04kb each
Discs Dead = 57.3kb (In total) - 9.56kb ech

So if asked to overwrite the Disc1.ace or be it in the main folder and it asks to overwrite do you just say yes?
Still confused.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
I'm jumping in again!!
Yes, overwrite the files in the main loco folder, BUT before you do, make sure you've got 6 disk files in each of the Live and Dead folders. All the files in a given folder are exactly the same, except for their name.

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged,
Easier to explain face to face rather than via messaging.... But anyway I will explain it as best as I can.

So am I right in assuming that to get the different Disc Headcodes that for example you copy as an example;

Bournemouth Central-Brockenhurst Via Ringwood uses 2 (Middle)

So you take Disc2 out of the Live folder and place in the main folder and then put the others....Except of course Disc2.ace from the dead folder to the main folder?
Then after you are done and want to do an alternate Headcode you put them back remembering of course what goes where?

Sorry for this long-drawn out thread, but I hope I'm getting there?

Cheers (And apologies Danny)

Andy

Hi all,
Apologies, I think I've just figured it out.... Going back to Danny's Alpha channel post, you just copy from the dead and the live to the main folder over-writing each time? so say for;

Bournemouth Central-Brockenhurst Via Ringwood uses 2

You would copy and overwrite 1,3,4,5,6 from the dead folder?
And copy over 2 from the live folder to the main folder?

Is this correct?

Cheers

Andy

Hi Ged and all,
One of the reasons that I got confused was with the different .ace files in the Live and Dead folders.... Anyway I have copied these all to each of Danny's Bulleid folders....
Cheers
