Installing Train Sim Modeller on Windows 7 64 bit. Empty Installing Train Sim Modeller on Windows 7 64 bit.

There are other tutorials on how to install TSM on Windows 7, 64 bit, but as i've just done it twice in quick succession (that's another story), I thought it would help people here if i detailed the method i used.
DISCLAIMER: It worked for me, but I take no responsibility for your system going belly up. You do this at your own risk.

The main problem is not TSM itself, but the installer which makes W7 throw a wobbly. If you can get around the installer, it will work without any problems.

STEP 1
You need a clean version of TSM installed to copy onto your W7 machine.
My previous Windows system was XP. After backing up all of the TSM files, I un-installed. and then re-installed TSM into my XP system, which gave me a 'virgin' Abacus folder.
You will know your registration key, but jot down the company and user names you used. You will need them later.

STEP 2
Navigate in 'program' files to where TSM was installed and copy the Abacus folder onto some sort of portable media. I used a memory stick.

STEP 3
You now need to copy the Abacus folder onto your W7 machine. Navigate to your ProgramFiles(86) folder and copy the Abacus folder into it.
Open the Abacus folder, navigate to the TS Modeller folder, open and create a shortcut of the TSM.exe on your desktop.

STEP 4
Click the short-cut and if all is well, TSM will open. The only problem is it will tell you its a demo version (or something similar) and you will not be able to export any of your creations.

NOW THE DANGEROUS BIT............................. EDITING THE REGISTRY
I strongly recommend you back up your registry and make a restore point before making any changes to the registry.

Three modifications need to be made to the Registry.
I made screngrabs of my Windows XP registry entries and what it will look like in Windows 7. I have over-written my registration key.

MODIFICATION 1
This is what it looked like in XP. Overlaid are the instructions what to modify in W7 and a screengrab from W7

Close the registry.

Hopefully, the next time you open TSM, you will have the full working version. Set up your preferences/paths to MSTS etc as normal.
I have not investigated whether my old models will be viewable in TSM if i copy over the old folders. I doubt not.
Possibly by installing into Program files as opposed to Programfiles(86) on W7 may work if the drive letter is the same as the one on your old system, but I have not tried it and no gaurantees.

Good Luck.

I have now got a copy of TSM and I have read this thread with obvious interest. I PM'd Clive to see whether he knew that the approach for W7 64 bit could also be used for W7 32bit - my current OS.
His reply suggested that TSM might install direct, which would be of major importance because I haven't got an alternative home computer with XP! Shocked Shocked Shocked
I shall attempt to install TSM direct and report back.
If things go pear shaped then it would appear that I have bought the proverbial "pig in a poke"! Sad Sad Sad
Alec

PS: I don't have an XP OS disc either that I could use to form a dual boot!

After a period spent with my finger poised over the install button, I finally plucked up the courage to go for it and . . . . .

TSM appears to have installed correctly, and it would therefore suggest that W7 32bit will accept TSM! Properties says that it is V1.0.

I have downloaded what I think is 1.1 but it "talks" about installing TSM. Can anyone confirm that this is correct?

In hope, Alec

Hi Alec,
As long as you have all your credentials..... Licence key etc, then the latest update download will work fine to install over the top. You get a free upgrade as per the Instructions here; http://www.abacuspub.com/ts/catalog/s461.htm

Tried all three links on that page and they all seem to be dead.

Maybe Alec can point us to the update? I just checked it myself and it isn't working... I am sure the update will however overwrite and update files as with all/most updates.

If you google "Train sim modeller v1.1 update" some other sites will come up who host the free update, I am already on v1.1 so I'm not sure of the reliability or legality of these sites. but as it was originally a free update there shouldn't be any legal problem with it being hosted elsewhere.

I did download off the internet and I believe that it is from an acceptable site, BUT after my earlier experiences I am reluctant to post the link here.

Best of luck with it Alec, there are a few rolling stock building tutorials around that should help you get to grips with the basics Smile

If my experience with it is anything to go by, you'll add a few more new expletives to your vocabulary Laffs

Installing Train Sim Modeller on Windows 7 64 bit. Empty Re: Installing Train Sim Modeller on Windows 7 64 bit.

Post  slipperman12 Tue 08 Apr 2014, 10:50 pm

Hi All,
I just happened across this thread while searching for something else!  I don't know if I've reported this under MSTS, but I think it's rather important that it's repeated here.  The following is a slightly edited combination of my posts on MSTS :

I've found a simpler way of installing TSM from the CD into a 64 bit OS - well, I think it's simpler - it takes longer to write down than to do!!

I obtained the details from this site : http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=10988 and it does seem to work OK - TSM installed and let me enter my registration key.
1. Create a temporary folder on your hard drive - maybe called TSM.
2. Create a folder within TSM called TSM-CD - ensure it is NOT read-only.
3. Copy all the files off the TSM CD into folder TSM-CD.
4. Go to the website linked above and download Is3engine.zip (about 1/3rd way down page) into folder TSM.
5. Unpack Is3engine.zip to end up with a folder called Is3engine which contains a file setup32.exe.
6. Copy setup32.exe into folder TSM-CD.  This folder already contains setup.exe, which may be deleted, to avoid confusion.
7. To install TSM, run setup32.exe.

The folders may have whatever name/s you wish and all files can be stored in one instead of two.  I used two in an attempt to make the procedure clear.  It goes without saying (but I will!) that all folders, including where TSM is finally installed, should NOT be in Program Files or Program Files (x86).

The download files files also use a 16-bit installer : AbacusTSMHelp.exe, AbacusTSMLibrary.exe and AbacusTSM.exe; the last one being the complete v1.1 of TSM which was available directly from Abacus. The Help and Library files are, I believe, updates for the original v1.0 (CD) version of TSM.
I have now discovered how to install these into a 64-bit OS - and it doesn't involve a 32-bit OS installation!!

1. Run the .exe file and when you get the message box "Unsupported 16-Bit Application" displayed - STOP - DO NOT click OK
2. Go to C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Temp
3. Find a folder that's just been created - it'll have an odd name (mine is ~EXB0000) and in it you'll find a folder called DISK1
4. Copy DISK1 to a safe place; if you have more than one .exe file to be installed, I suggest you rename it to reflect its contents.
5. Now click OK on the "Unsupported...." message box and you'll see the original DISK1 folder disappear (but you've saved it, haven't you??!). Click to remove the subsequent boxes.
6. Go to where you saved the new DISK1 folder and add setup32.exe (see my previous post) into it.
7. Open the folder and run setup32.exe, as Administrator - the installation should continue normally.

There are two, relatively small, things which don't work - first is that when the installation is progressing, the message "Setup is creating icons" is displayed, but they aren't! Secondly, if you try to uninstall TSM or a part of TSM, it may not always work
.

Cheers,
Ged

I note the statement in your post that says the TSM files should not be in Program Files! I run W7 32bit OS, and my TSM files are located within the folder called Abacus in Program Files !
So far the programme appears to work correctly, but I am obviously still a little concerned?

Hi all,
A question I have if I may; My TSM doesn't open TSM files directly from the file inside a folder!! It just crashes TSM. It seems you have to go into TSM to open the file.... Is there a registry entry I need to adjust and if there is what is it?
Thanks
Andy

Hi,
Alec, I put all my MSTS associated software away from Program Files / Program Files (x86). It's just my belt & braces practice, but if it works OK for you, that's fair enough!

Andy, Even when the Registry entry is correctly set, it doesn't seem possible to just double-click on a .dst file without an error message and subsequently a "Stopped working" message.
I'll keep looking to see if there's a solution!

Ged

If I click on a TSM  .dst file I get this.

Installing Train Sim Modeller on Windows 7 64 bit. Tsm_wa10

Obviously I don't want to change the folder TSM starts in so I click NO
TSM then stops working (it never realy started) and Windows closes it.

THis happens on W7 but the same thing happens on XP

Not realy a problem.
