The Withered Arm (Yeovil into West Country)
Route Name = The Withered Arm
Route Author = Dikki Dee
Route Location = Semi-fictional SR line from Yeovil into the West Country to Torrington and Ilfracombe
Route Mileage = TBC
Route Era = late1950s to early 1960s
Route Source = from UKTS downloading at UKTrainSim.
Additional files required to be installed = Newroads - X Tracks
Route Description =
An MSTS route available to download as noted above.
“This route is a semi-fictional rendition of the old Southern route into Devon and Cornwall, and is often referred to as "The Withered Arm". It starts from Yeovil and extends into the West Country to Torrington and Ilfracombe. It includes all the little branches off the mainline to a number of nearby seaside towns. It is set in the late 1950's to early 1960's, but neither the route nor the places are factually accurate. Traffic during the summer was extremely heavy with long holiday trains; conversely during the winter months when passenger traffic was light you could see two carriage trains being pulled by a Bullied Pacific. Freight traffic consisted of farm produce, milk and aggregates. Paths are included from most of the important destinations and the scope for activities is promising. The route is signalled in line with proper BR practice for the period. The route was steeply graded with tight curves and many single line sections - it isn’t the easiest route to drive with steam.”
Two activities and relevant stock are available from UKTS.
