Missing S files in MEP-Derby_LW

There are 68 eng files in this folder and almost all are missing their shape files. There are 18 shape files with names which do not seem to relate to those being called up and just two shape definition files.
(I am using the OpenRails versions of the eng files)
Has anyone cracked this one?

Hi Jonathan,
I don't think there's anything to crack!!
There are several .eng files which use the same shape file. The reason being that the various .eng files call different FreightAnim shape files for things like destination blinds.

If I've got this wrong, please come back, pointing to the .eng files which don't have shape files.

By the way, I've only got 64 .eng files and two .wag files, although I do have 18 shape files

I may have miscounted. But the attached error file from MSTS_Check tells the story.
There were lots of other missing s files, but I have identified substitutes for them all, though I think I may now get some error messages about missing sd files.
The problem with this lot is that there is just too much to sort out.
I MAY be naming the wrong software. Some time ago I bought a new laptop and it had loaded Bullguard antivirus. That program seemed to delete files at random whether there was a problem or not. I quickly got rid of it but the damage had been done and I am still finding (or rather not finding) examples of its efforts.
If you tell me that you have all the missing files I shall try to download MEPO again and see if I can get them back - if MSTS is still there (or did I buy a CD?).
What surprises me is that I have not come across the issue with these files before.
I tried to upload a Word file of the errors but was told that it exceeded the maximum size!

Hi Jonathan,
Either you have a completely different version of MEP than I do, or there's something sadly amiss with yours!!
There are no shape files having the prefix :  MEP-DLW-DMBS or MEP-DLW-DMCL

Using MSTS_Check, the only errors I get are with the sounds check - no missing shapes were reported.

Taking your first example, indicating that file  MEP-DLW-DMBS-Blank.s  is missing.
There's no such file in my MEP installation.
The stock item is shown as   #MEP-DLW-DMBS-Blank.eng
Looking at this file, the main shape entry is :  WagonShape ( MCLW_Derby_DMBS_A.s )
- and the FA entry is  FreightAnim ( "MCLW_Derby_DB_Blank.s" 0 3.0 0.0 )

As you can see, neither match the one in your report.

May I suggest that you open your  #MEP-DLW-DMBS-Blank.eng file and see what the WagonShape and FreightAnim entries are.
These are the first few lines of my #MEP-DLW-DMBS-Blank.eng :

If yours matches mine, then there would seem to be a problem with MSTS_Check - which version are you using?

Sorry, but you'll not be able to download MEP from UKTS - it was only available on DVD, but if you've still got it, you're covered!!

Thanks. It was about 3 am when I got that report. I'll investigate further.
They are the OpenRails versions of the eng files, dated August 2019. They definitely call up shape filews with names beginning MEO
BTW, am I right in thinking that there should be a shape definition file to go with each shape file? After all, the shape definition file defines a particular shape file. So how come there are only two?
MSTS_Check is version 2.1, 2020.
Incidentally, I have dealt with at least the same number of other missing shape files, all but one for dmus. Odd.
It would also be good if the website could be sorted so it is possible to attach files. It says maximum 3 Mb and mine was 63 kb.

Well, you've told me something I wasn't aware of!!
I didn't know that Open Rails versions of stock for MEP was available.  Please let me know the UKTS file IDs or from where you obtained them.
I, somehow, doubt that such radical changes would have been made to an existing set of rolling stock.

I DO have three Class 108 .eng/.wag files for Open Rails from Mick Clarke, but not as replacements for MEP stock.  I have nothing dated 2019.

Open Rails doesn't (or didn't?) use .sd files for stock items, so you may not need them.

Of course you can attach a file, so long as the extension matches those permitted - 63kb is much smaller than 3MB!

On my computer the OpenRails eng files are in a folder called OpenRails within the main folder for each item of stock, along with the cabview and sound folders. I am steadily replacing the original eng files with those from the OpenRails folder, though sometimes I need to check things like common sound files called up as they can be different. Most are similar to the originals except for extra information and a lot of comments, but others call up other common files and may be only 15 or 20 lines. I still have 91 such folders to deal with.
But I am defeated. I have just run the MSTS_Check program again and it has produced none of the errors listed above. I'll crawl back into my hole.
Useful to know that OpenRails does not use the shape definition files.
Re trying to attach a file, it was a Word file so doc format which is permitted but the message I received was that it was too large. Ws there perhaps a buffer which was full or something like that?
I have now managed to attach one of the OpenRails files as a Zip file.

Are you absolutely sure those .eng and .wag files are intended for use with MEP? They are nothing like the original files for the Class 104 stock.
I accept that they are probably supplied for use in the OpenRails sub-folder of the relevant stock folder, but at least the .eng and .wag file names must be identical to their originals in the main stock folder.

From where did you get those files and did the pack contain instructions regarding incorporating them into MEP? If so, I'd like to see it, please!!

Sorry if I misled you. The zip file I attached was not from an MEP file as I have already dealt with the MEP ones and do not have the OpenRails folders. It was from
NS_BRCW 104 LMR WhiskersStoke.
But that folder is too big to attach here
In general the OpenRails folders contain files with the same names as the original eng files, though sometimes there are not replacements for all of them. They mostly seem to be dated 2019 though that may be a quirk of when I uploaded them to this laptop.
And I do not remember seeing any instructions as to their use. I merely looked at them and as they seemed to be doing the same job as the originals copied them into the main folder and over-wrote the originals. Mostly they are for locomotives and multiple units but there are a very few for other rolling stock.
Back to that error report, I am really not sure what happened as I cannot get MSTS_Check to do anything like it again. Quite why it said that the shape files were missing I cannot fathom.
Anyway, that part of my trainsim installation now has no sound or shape file errors.

Just to report that I have had another case where the program flagged up missing shape files when there were sound file errors, but once these had been corrected the shape file errors magically disappeared.

What program reports missing shape files when there are sound errors?
If a report is created, please attach the file.

Errors can't 'magically' disappear - something must have been done to clear them.

If it's one of my programs, please give full details.  Thinking about it, whatever program it is, please give full details!!

Going back to your previous message.  If an OpenRails folder is supplied for some stock, the files in that folder MUST NOT be copied into the matching TRAINSET folder because, in most cases, they are not complete files, being a subset of full .eng/.wag files.  They are not MSTS files and any program expecting MSTS files will, almost certainly, report errors.  When Open Rails is run, it reads the .eng/.wag files in the TRAINSET stock folders and then 'looks' for a matching file in the OpenRails folder and, if present, applies any parameters, replacing those read from the 'MSTS' .eng/.wag file.

Maybe that's what you've been doing?

Thanks for the warning.
The reason I have been checking through the OpenRails subfolders is that I have found that on quite a few occasions the common sound and cabview files called up are different from those in the main eng files – though that may be partly (but certainly not by any means only) because I tend to try to rationalise the number of common cab and sound files I have and I may already have changed them from something I had not downloaded.
But three questions arise:
1. What does OpenRails do when the cabview file called up by the OpenRails version of the eng file is different from that called by the version in the main stock folder? And ditto with the sound files
2. What is the purpose of files in the OpenRails folder which are not matched by files in the main stock folder? These are usually $ type eng files. This occurs for example with the BR_Class118_xxx rolling stock.
3. Is it possible to use the utility to check the files within the OpenRails folder?
Incidentally, reading your help file for the utility I can see how errors could “disappear” as it will depend on the order in which reports are generated.
I am most grateful for your help and expertise with all this as I am very much out of my depth.

To answer your questions :
1. Open Rails will use the Cabview/Sound files specified in the .eng/.wag file in the OpenRails folder.
2. As far as I know, there should not be any .eng files in the OpenRails folder which don't have matches in the main stock folder.  Open Rails always reads the main stock folder first, then looks for a file with the same name in the OpenRails folder.
3. I have not written a utility which will do that (yet!) although I have written one which checks that 'Include' files called from the main stock file, or its OpenRails equivalent actually exist, but it's not been released.  Are you asking that any Cabviews and Sounds called from the OpenRails .eng/.wag files be checked for existence?
