Spam Phone call today
Hi everybody, I had a very interesting phone call today from a person with a foreign accent who said
he was speaking on behalf of Microsoft warning me of a possible virus attack when using the Internet.
He never said my name and when I asked how he got my ex-directory number he replied from BT, yes
I use BT Broadband but I doubted that this was a genuine call and refused to allow them to know
anything about the settings in my computer which has Kaspersky Internet Security installed.
When I didn't play ball, he put the phone down and this confirmed that it was a random call which I do
get from time to time hoping I would fall for the scam.

That one is a well known scam Bob, it's been doing the rounds for a year or more now (probably a lot longer) they claim that you have a security risk then promise to fix it, either for an extortionate amount, or they plant some malware onto your computer to steal all your details, passwords etc.

Mmmmm . . . I also had a "call" this evening from someone purporting to be from my bank saying that there was unusual activity on my account and would I go through some details with them. I must admit she was quite believable but a combination of my wife and general unease made me finish the call without saying anything about me.
I then rang the fraud department of my bank after about 10 minutes to report the call and check to see whether there was any truth. Apparently not although I need to check again tomorrow.
I mention the waiting time as I understand that a caller can appear to close the call but actually not put the phone down and thus the line remains open so if you call back immediately to check you get the same caller!
Having experienced an attempted hack of my account a little while ago I always assume the worse!

Re: Spam Phone call today
This brings me onto my Sub-Contractor partner whom has had 2 Phone Scam calls today!! The first one was with regards to his building premises saying he is paying too much fpr his buiding & business rates...... Funny that!! He owns the building lot! I was whispering in the background from the tone saying hang up - He did it in absolute style!! Knackered after 12 hours working....

I checked with the bank again this morning, and thankfully the balance is as it should be! But I will still need to be vigilant! This combined with the numerous calls about PPI and my impaired hearing - apparently I've worked in extremely noisy environments - are shall we say irritating me. Of course "irritating" is somewhat of a major understatement!
In terms of the latter I normally tell them that my hearing is being impaired by silly people ringing me up about impaired hearing.
It's more or less impossible to get these calls blocked other than using a "call blocker" or phones with an in-built call blocker - I'm thinking of investing in one?

Hi Alec,
I use Caller Display which is cheap and any unknown callers I don't answer - they are always invited to leave a message - very simple.
Regards,
Stephen
