Windows 8 Installation Empty Windows 8 Installation

Post  35005CP Wed 18 Dec 2013, 10:22 am

Hi all,
Apologies if this has been discussed before.. I have just installed MSTS on to my Windows 8 Laptop because my Power Supply has given up on my Windows 7 Laptop and a new one has been ordered. But I have got a scrambled screen as shown in the following screenshot!

Windows 8 Installation _10

Does anyone know what the problem is and how to overcome it? I have a funny feeling this is because of a Video Card issue? My Graphics Card is an Intel HD 4000.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,
Did you install MSTS following the steam4me windows vista\windows 7 instructions, because you will get all sorts of problems if you installed it into program files or program files(x86 )
Most of the problems with video cards are with Radeon cards, not sure about Intel Cards

HI Mike,
Yes I did install as I always do via Steam4me website...
Looks as though it is an issue with Intel cards as well.... http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic.php?f=237&t=134976&p=1673331&hilit=MSTS+Scrambled+Screen#p1673331
Ged posted the last message on the above link, so I wonder if he knows a fix for it? Failing that I guess I will have to wait for the Power Supply to arrive for my Windows 7 Laptop....  Evil or Very Mad Crying or Very sad

Hi Andy,
Sorry I'm late ... been busy!!

The problem you're having appears to be caused by the Intel integrated graphics (according to several posts over at Trainsim.com). There is no solution, except to install a separate graphics card - which MUST be NVidia at this moment in time, as you're using Win 8!!

Cheers,
Ged

Post  35005CP Wed 18 Dec 2013, 3:56 pm

Hi Ged,
No problem. I won't be able to fit a new Graphics card as it is on a Windows 8 Laptop! If anyone is able to find a solution to this, I'd certainly be very grateful!
From a post I read some people seem to think It could have something to do with the Fonts being wiped that MSTS uses or since the Windows 8.1 Upgrade. I'm going to go and have a look for a tool to remove 8.1 and get back to Windows 8 to see if that resolves the problem???
Failing that I am just going to have to be patient until my new AC Power Supply arrives for my Windows 7 Laptop!
Cheers

Hi Andy,
Looking carefully at your screenshot, it appears as if the correct MSTS screen is underneath. Is it possible to, sort of, ignore the overlay and press whichever key you would have pressed to start MSTS?

I'll have a look at trainsim.com again to see if anybody has found a solution.

Ged

Hi Ged,
I can get into the Sim itself, but even the letters etc are Scrambled in the game! Such as if you press Forward/Reverse, Letters and numbers on the Models and the station Start/Stop etc..... Basically everything! I have Installed OpenRails and everything works fine in this Sim!
I say everything works correctly, but in the Activity I have created for LSE, the standing start doesn't work as it does in MSTS. I can test your Act using OpenRils if you like, but it won't be an ideal test.

Post  slipperman12 Wed 18 Dec 2013, 4:37 pm

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the offer, but I'd rather have it tested using its intended sim!  I feel there are too many differences between them to make the results of any tests in Open Rails pertinent to MSTS.  If anybody else has the SVR route installed and would like to test an activity for me, please get in touch!!

Regarding the Intel graphics problem - I show a post from trainsim.com :
Hi Ged,
Thanks for the response. Reading thru this thread, I found that a common problem was with the display adapters. When I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 the jumble alphanumerics appear on my Menu screens. I went to the device manager on my machine, open displays, and click the properties tab onIntel (R) HD Graphics. Then clicked the drivers tab and found that the drivers was updated the same time I updated to 8.1. The new version number was 10.18.10.3316 dated 10/1/2013. I then rolled it back to version 9.17.10.2867 dated 9/26/2012. Test MSTS and it removed the scrambled alphanumerics and the Menu, driveraids and features readable as it should be. If any body want to try this, of course you do it at your own risk.
Harry

I assume that you haven't upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1, like Harry, and I'm not sure where to get "old" Intel drivers!

Another post suggested that the problems were caused by some missing fonts, but until I follow this up, on my Win 8 PC, I can't offer any guidance.

Cheers,
Ged

Errmmm Too late for that! I did that Windows 8.1 Upgrade some weeks ago now!!!...... (Dobby, bad dobby! "Must bang head against brick wall!")

Hi Andy,
I did that Windows 8.1 Upgrade some weeks ago now
In that case, can you follow "Harry's" post about checking the Fonts folder in the Windows.old folder?

Alternatively, can you do a System Restore to before the 8.1 upgrade was applied?

Hi Ged,
2 issues... I don't have a Windows.old folder and I don't have a Restore Point from when Windows 8 was installed...... Not sure where to go from here. I have to say I am not a huge fan of Windows 8!!  Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
Just as a different idea? Maybe 1 that hasn't been thought off? Is it worth going into the MSTS\Fonts Directory and checking it against the Windows\fonts directory and make sure that windows has all the ones that MSTS uses? And if not finding the missing ones and Installing those?
Cheers

Post  slipperman12 Wed 18 Dec 2013, 7:45 pm

Hi Andy,
Oh, well! It was worth a try!!

The MSTS FONTS folder contains .ace and .fnc (font geometry) files whereas the Windows FONTS folder contains the fonts themselves.
The names of the MSTS .ace files seem to have some relation to actual font names, but other than that, I don't know how they interact. I still haven't started up my Win 8 PC, but does the Windows folder contain a FONTS folder? If it uses a different, but similar, name it may be worth making a copy of it and naming it as FONTS.

Sorry - just thinking aloud!!

Ged

Hi Ged,
Well I think I have tried everywhere so far for an answer. I have even gone onto Microsoft's website and checked the part about MSTS being compatible and Incompatible with Windows 8.1 and have chosen the latter!
Seems a lot about issues with Windows 8.1 and compatibility issues....
And Yes Windows 8 does have a FONTS directory under the Windows sub-menu. I can't see any issues here either.....  BashHead

Hi Ged and everyone else,
I have found the issue with my Windows 7 Laptop after receiving the new AC Power Supply today and after finding it still not working.
So being an IT Engineer I have stripped the laptop down to find it is the DC Jack that is the issue. So another £7-£8 to spend, but for about £15 in total spend for the repair I can't complain about that!
Imagine the cost if it had to be sent away to a specialist......
Anyway, apologies Ged, me testing you're activity is going to be a little bit longer yet. Sorry mate!  Crying or Very sad
It might mean also that my Activity my be some time before it can be finalised and tested.....  Evil or Very Mad  Which might mean it not being ready for the 'MSTS 12 Days of Christmas'..... Sorry everyone....  Embarassed

Hi Ged,
Apologies once again mate! I will of course keep you in the loop in proceedings as far as the broken Windows 7 Laptop goes! (Bloomin' thing!)  Mad
Mind you it should only take me 15 mins or so to put it back together again once the new part arrives..... I just hope it is this side of Christmas!
In the meantime, if anyone manages to find a solution or an alternative to the Windows 8 problem!..... Then I am all ears!!.....

Hi Andy,
I did have a idea that if you could copy the Win 7 fonts into the Win 8 fonts folder, it might solve the problem! Unfortunately, I can't add anything into that folder - but I'm working on it! I even copied and pasted the Win 8 fonts folder and, although it seemed to work without error, I can't find it!! I think it should be in the Users folder somewhere.
I'll let you know of any progress I make.

Please do and if it does work, please can you send me the Fonts? That aside do you have Agent Ransack? It's a really useful tool for searching for files!

Hi Andy,
Will do!
I think you put me on to Ransack some time ago, and believe I still have it tucked away somewhere.
Unfortunately, the Win 8 fonts folder isn't a 'normal' folder like the Win 7 one is, and it seems that you can only "Install" new fonts!

Not a problem with testing 2 Activities for you!! Shame to hear you're giving up after these two..... I need to get back up to speed again...  Shocked
I too have been testing different things and haven't been able to come up with an answer, although I still suspect it is an issue with the fonts of Windows 8 and not compatible with MSTS...... I've tried downloading a few fonts and sorry to say I too have given up!!  Surprised

Ged,
Just as I finished posting that last post, I thought that tomorrow I might load the Windows 7 Laptops Hard Drive into the docking station and copy the Windows 7 Fonts into the Windows 8's Fonts Directory to see if that works!?
It doesn't matter if it screws the Windows 8 Laptop Install at all because as soon as I have my Windows 7 Laptop up and running this windows 8 bugger is going to be formatted with my Windows 7 Installation Disk! Hi Andy,
I wish you luck with copying the fonts from Win 7 to Win 8, but I don't think it'll let you do it!!

I'm not necessarily giving up writing activities (never say never!!), it's just that I don't think I'll be doing any more for that route and event.  I quite enjoyed doing them, even the many runs through to make sure they did what I wanted them to do!  However, it doesn't mean they'll work exactly the same on someone else's PC, which is where you come in Smile

Roger : Personally, I still have an open mind on Windows 8 / 8.1.  If the AMD drivers can be made to work, I'll be happier, although there will still be a problem with the Intel integrated graphics system.
Still, I don't suppose you can expect a 12/13 year old program to still work correctly (I won't say flawlessly because it's NEVER done that!) for ever.

Cheers,
Ged

I have managed to copy over the Windows 7 Fonts into the Windows 8 Fonts folder, but still isn't working.... So maybe back to the drawing board on this one! I may dislike Windows 8, but being an IT Techie, I really would like to find a resolution to this niggling problem!!  Mad

Hi Ged and all,
I've now fitted the DC control cable and seated it properly on the Windows 7 Laptop! As of now all seems to be running okay! Just cleaning it up a bit! Took about 20 mins to put back together rather than the 15 mins estimate I gave.... Probably because I had to reseat the keyboard cable properly through testing it whilst putting it back together!  BashHead  Laughing
But Ged, if you want to email the first Act through I will give it a test and see how I get on... I've started testing my Act that I never got to finish of for the 12 days of Christmas and that runs as smooth as anything, so if you want to send it onto me on Sunday to give me a chance to clean the Laptop up and transfer my Outlook files etc back that will be great!
