Route Name: The Bedford-Hitchin Branch
Route Author: Charles Malcolm
Route type: Branch Line.
Route Mileage: 16 miles.
Route Era: late 1940’s to 1964.

Route Description:
This was a route for MSTS and can no longer be downloaded from UKTrainSim following its closure.
Associated stock, activities and a patch are also no longer available from UKTS.
The following description is taken from the Readme included with the download.
The route depicts the 16 mile branch that linked the Midland Main Line at Bedford to the East Coast Mainline at Hitchin. The route was originally built to allow the Midland Railway access to London. Trains from the north would travel to Hitchin where they would share the ECML with the Great Northern. This arrangement continued until the Midland Railway London extension to St Pancras was completed when the route became a branch. The era depicted ranges from nationalisation to the line’s closure.
During this time passenger services were worked by BR Standard 2 Tanks or Ivatt 2MT tanks, based at Bedford. Some trains were made up of push-pull stock. For most of the branches existence freight trains were worked by ex-MR Johnson 3F locomotives. The only eastern region engine regularly to perform on the branch during this time was a Hitchin based J15 which worked relief trains to and from RAF Henlow.
In the late fifties diesels began to appear on the branch. Passenger services were worked by a class 103/108 DMU or Park Royal rail buses. Eventually type 2 diesels took over freight duties too, generally there were Sulzer Type 2s (class 26) based at Hornsey.
Passenger services ceased in December 1961 and freight continued until 1964, when the track was lifted.
In addition to the route there was an Activity and stock pack available featuring rolling stock that would have typically been seen on the line during the period modelled. There were 10 activities included in this pack. (Note: there was also a patch available for the stock and activity pack.)
