Had to give myself a name as it seems the trend. Smile

Not quite as exciting as the Pullman coaches, but someone has to make the more mundane things.

2nd variation still on the jigs.

Hi Clive,

They look good, I've just downloaded them when I signed into UKTS.

Sorry guys the UKTS file linking doesn't work on here.

Nice work Clive
Like you correctly state someone has to make the mundane rolling stock
All those members here that are on the creative side are a credit to the hobby
Keep up the good work

Hi All,

With the civil engineering department being stretched to the limit, staff have been in short supply to man the workshops but finally,  overtime hours have been granted to start a another  project.

A new (old) diesel for the lines eventually, inspired  by a post on UKTS,  re the removal of some stock many years ago.

A couple of hours this evening making the wheels and bogies and then setting up the basic engine file.

Antalya Works Kestre10

Several brownie points will be awarded for a correct guess as to what is in progress.

Cheers

Hi Clive,
Can I take a punt at HS4000 'Kestrel'.....
Just going by the bogies and the triangular bit at the bottom is the reason I have come to the conclusion and with it not being in the UKTS Library.
Cheers

I gave too many clues and you are correct Smile

Another couple of hours this afternoon and the basic rolling chassis is in finished.

Battery boxes, bogie end plates and buffers added. Far too many polys at the moment so the wheels and axles may need re-making. Each wheel set is made with 5 x 32 sided tubes. They look nice and round but may cause problems later.

Antalya Works Kestre11

Footplate added with the rounded ends that will make the creation and texturing of the cab ends interesting.

Antalya Works Kestre12

And the central body lump added.

Only make the wheel treads 32 sided.
Use a 6 sided tube for the wheel face and use the alpha channel to make them round.
You could also make the axles 6 sided - with a square block as the traction motor you won't see the axle anyway.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the suggestion re using an alpha for the wheel face. Never tried that before, but an alternative if I do have problems later.

The axles will need splitting and re-making eventually anyway. I copied and pasted them from the wheel, forgetting that they would be 32 sided as well. It's quite possible once the lower body work is made that I might be able to get rid of the axles altogether.

Cheers

Hi All,

Another few hours and its starting to take shape. Next is the upper cab half which will be slightly more challenging to get the windscreen texture on a curved shape.

Great Job Clive! Looking really good! It's all coming together really quickly.....Well a lot quicker than my 4-TC Unit and the Met Class 20!  Shocked
If I can make a suggestion (If I may?) regarding the front Cab Windscreen, maybe do that Separate and do the rest of the cab behind that in one go.....

Hi Andy
Yes that's what I will be doing although the cab top half will be in 5 sections (2 are the doors). Once everything lines up, they can then be joined and split front and back to give the alpha + and -.
Front screen in place.

Glad you're enjoying the progress shots Niall. I'm no expert at loco building but thought it might be useful for any budding model makers to see one way to make their own models.

Like Niall I'm enjoying the stage by stage development of the Kestrel, and anything that helps and encourages others is always welcome. It's looking really good.

Hi All,
A busy last couple of days with doing work outside while the good weather lasts but by burning the midnight oil, good progress on Falcon.

The wrap around screen and side windows in place.
Antalya Works Kestre15

The cab roofs moulded and added. A tedious job as I've not discovered an easy way to get the curves. Lots of going back and forwards moving points by fractions.
Antalya Works Kestre16

In MSTS its looking quite nice but still a few more details to add:
Fan cowlings.
Horns.
Roof panels to give the roof some appearance of depth.
Cab interior.

Then its the final texturing. As you may have noticed, I texture as I go. Mainly to make sure any nasty surprises are kept to a minimum, but now it will need re-texturing to try and get the colours on various parts to match.

The last job  will be setting up the engine files, lights, smoke etc. One part of MSTS  that I haven't spent a lot of time on so a bit of trial and error.

Cheers
Clive

Hi All,
Very nearly the finished product and the last time to be seen until eng files are made and tested and then the loco uploaded to MSTS.
Antalya Works Kestre18

I need to add traction motors to fill the bogie spaces and add the overhead wire flashes but that is all that is needed (i think).

A nice little break from route building.

Cheers

:Edit:
Just worked out why, it was because the frame's axis wasn't centred to Origin.

Thanks Alec re Kestrel. It was a nice little break from route building.

TT V2 took a back seat while I did Kestrel, but tonight i'll be back on it.

It's now full scenic, including signals, mileposts, speed limits etc., from Sheffield to Derby. I ran a St Pancras to Sheffield via Derby express the other evening and everything seems to be ok.

There was 2 branches that I needed to add: Wirksworth and Ripley. Both were freight only in the time period i'm re-creating. The Wirksworth branch is finished and the Ripley branch 1/2 done. I haven't posted any screenshots of these bits because basically there isn't a lot to see.

Once the Ripley branch is finished, then its going back to Clay Cross and working South towards Trent and Nottingham. About 30 miles (I think).

At that point, I'm not sure where i'll go, but it will be back onto the more southern part of the route.

Cheers
Clive

Thanks for the update. As an aside we visited Wirksworth the other week on our Ashboune holiday but not the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway as we had opted for Peak Rail.
