Todays Trial and Triumph
Well I had been thinking of when I first bought MSTS on Disc (Woolies) the main reason for getting it was the "Settle and Carlisle" Route,it had a nice picture on the Case of "Flying Scotsman", so I thought I'd give it a go.
Sadly I was not greatly impressed, I remember that the first time I tried it I could hardly get FS to move let alone fly, and when I finally did I couldn't get it to stop, but hey that's history now.
So today well having a look through UKTS (yes I'm still a member), it dawned on me that "Skipton to Carlisle 1920" was still available, so now it's on my PC running under Open Rails ,beautifully.
So if there are on this TSSH Club any members that thought "not a lot" about the S&C I fully advise them to add this, there is no COMPARISON ,you will love this Route, and running it in Midland Red Loco's just adds to its appeal.

Hi Roger,
20 years ago, MSTS was a HUGE step forward! I believe it was the first train simulator that used full graphics. Before that, we'd had text-only based simulators - I think one was called 'Black5'
I don't remember having any problems getting Flying Scotsman to run but, then again, in the excitement of it all, I think we tended to overlook any problems! v1 may well have had 'teething' problems, I don't know because my original purchase was of v1.2 (I still have the CDs and they still work!). I didn't buy it for myself, of course (?!), but for my step-grandson. We've all come a long way since then
For anyone interested, there is a version of the route set in 1946 - only scenery changes - and a patch to convert the signals to their post 1927 versions (ie yellow distant signals).
Cheers,
Ged

There is also a version that allows you to drive a little bit further - Leeds-Settle-Carlisle by Renzo Grassi - http://www.ildeposito.net/Files/Scenari/LeSeCa2.htm

Yes, both those versions of the Settle and Carlisle are nice. We are really very fortunate to have all the good routes we have.
One that is a bit odd is the route over Shap created, I think, by a Swiss MSTS enthusiast. If it is the same person, I have quite a lot of his stock which is very good, but he has now retired from the scene. It is one of the few routes I have deleted after trying it. The track layouts, gradients etc were fine but the buildings were absolute fiction and often not even British.
My first train simulator was for the Amstrad 464. It used wire frame graphics. But I thoroughly enjoyed the run from London to Brighton. I can't remember any other routes.
But most routes look better in Open Rails than in MSTS. I just wish there was an Open Rails program for creating activities - or is there and I don't know about it?

I too remember my first efforts with MSTS and in particular driving an English diesel on a Japanese route!
Mmm I thought there has to be more to this and bought Making Tracks' "London and South East" but my hopes were brought crashing down as it struggled to work. Blue was the colour of the air and I contemplated throwing it all out of the pram! However way back then I visited a UKTS demonstration at a Keighley model railway exhibition in 2008, I think, and Doug Kightly - there's a name from the past - suggested Train Store, after which the world was my oyster!
