AMD Graphics card fix to allow the running of MSTS under windows 8/8.1/10 whilst using AMD graphics card.

Please note:-

If the AMD drivers are updated, either through Windows Update or by installing updated drivers from the AMD site, the procedure detailed in the fix MUST be repeated, otherwise MSTS will fail.

There's no guarantee that this fix will always work. It depends on the actions of AMD and/or Microsoft.

It appears that a fairly recent (since September 2016) Windows 10 update has finally put an end to MSTS running with the "fix" for AMD graphics cards! File atiumdag.dll is no longer in the Windows\SysWOW64 folder.

Please note that I'm only referring the the HD series of cards - the newer R series might not have the problem, but I'm unable to confirm that.

Although the latest Windows 10 update includes an update to the AMD drivers, uninstalling those and re-installing a previous version under which MSTS did work has not improved matters. This is what has led me to think the cause is a Windows update.

Useful information has been received from other users, for which I'm very grateful - Thanks chaps

I've run full tests on the available drivers and here's an update :

The last version of the HD Series drivers available from the AMD site which enables MSTS to work under Windows 10 with an AMD HD graphics card (plus "fix") is 16.8.3.  This is shown as 16.300.2511.1003, dated 30/08/2016 on the Driver properties screen (from Device Manager).

If you've been running MSTS satisfactorily under Win 10 with an AMD HD graphics card and suddenly you get the "train.exe has stopped working" message, it's a pretty good chance that Windows Update had applied a driver update.  If this happens, go into Device Manager and roll-back the graphics card driver.  The trouble is, it'll probably keep happening until AMD stops issuing updates for your particular graphics card.  My backup PC uses an HD 7850 and the latest updates are for the HD 7700 - 7900 Series, so had the "not working" problem.

I have been able to get MSTS Sim and Editors to work with an AMD HD 5750 graphics card under Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, but there are a few elements which I've not been able to get working properly.

1. Sim : The antialiasing settings from Catalyst are not being applied, which makes running the sim "uncomfortable".
2. Route Editor : Appears to work correctly, except that the "snap to grid" information panel continually flashes on and off. Not tested, other than starting it.
3. Activity Editor : Appears to work correctly, but I've not created an activity with it.

I've tried various other settings within dgVoodooSetup.exe (v2.53) without success.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi All,
That very clever chap, Jack Fuste, has created a new version of the AMD BugFix. This was necessary because his previous version hasn't worked for any drivers released after 16.8.3 (30/08/2016).

As well as working for the older drivers, the new version allows MSTS to work with the latest, 18.8.1 (02/08/2018).

CAVEAT : MSTS doesn't display correctly when using drivers 18.7.1, but I feel it might be an AMD error because there was no problem with the previous version (18.5.1).
