I am having a bit of a problem with smoke from steam locos, Instead of it coming out pure jet black and ocasionly white!
It is leaving the chimney and also cylinder cocksa mixture of both black and white.
I have no idea why it is happening or how to cure it.
Do I need to reinstall 1MSTS from scratch.
I have just run the Westerham branvh tran with 31305 and have also tried out an R1 and 01, in explore mode and they are the same.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
Does it only happen on this route?

I've tried setting all the Advanced Display settings to their lowest level and still can't reproduce the effects you describe!

Cheers,
Ged

Hello Ged.
No I have  put the SVR standard 80079 on a foreign route and it does exactly the same, a mixture of black and white smoke.
I have taken a screenshot of 31305 at  Dunton green, the trouble is I do not know how to put screenshots on this thread.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
It sounds as if it's a problem with your PC. It's possible that it has reverted to default monitor drivers - can you check Device Manager? If so, click the + next to Monitors and report what it says on the next line.

For posting screenshots, see here : https://tsforum.forumotion.net/t630-posting-pictures-on-the-tssh-forum#7422

Hi Andy,
As I suspected, it's using the default PnP (Plug 'n' Play) drivers.
Do you have drivers for your monitor? If not, please let me know the manufacturer and model of your monitor and I'll see if I can find them for you Smile

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged.
I'm afraid, I am rather loosing the plot, Sorry Far to technical for the likes of me.
I do not know much about my monitor, It is a 19" screen and called 1-INC .
that is the only information I have.
I ran the Golden Arrow activity last night, and noted that all of the A1 trains also displayed the same smoke.
Sorry to be vague and hope this helps
Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
Sorry, I can't find any reference to that monitor on the 'net.
Isn't there a label on the back (or bottom) showing all sorts of information, including the manufacturer and model number?
From what you've said, it's not a widescreen monitor. Is it a cathode ray tube model (very chunky) or LCD/LED model (slim)?

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Andy,
Thanks, mate Smile
Trouble was you quoted 1-INC when it should have been 1-1NC!
Anyway, Google has thrown up a couple of matches, but I can't recommend them, yet!!  Of course, you are quite free to look yourself!

I'll post again if I get something sensible Smile

Cheers,
Ged

EDIT : Have you just started using this monitor? If not, and the problem has only just surfaced, have you recently re-installed Windows or updated to Windows 10? I'd have thought a driver CD would have come with the monitor.

No Ged have had it for at least 7 or 8 years, I have had windows 7 for about a year now upgrading from XP Home.
I would not touch W10 with a barge pole, I do not like having things imposed on me, and I think there are plenty more like me reading various posts.
As my monitor behaves perfectly with other things like pictures, youtube Google.
I am of the opinion that it might be MSTS that is causing the problem, I am very tempted to try an re-installation and see what happens.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Ged.
There is nothing whatsoever wrong with my monitor! As I suspected the problem was MSTS related all along.
I remembered that amongst the utilities is a programme called Steam Rep, so I ran it tonight, It is an exc file
and Hey Presto everything is restored to how it should be White Steam out of the whistle and cylinders.
White/Grey/Black Embarassed Smoke out of the chimney. Very Happy
I remember having to do a full restore a few months back following a full crash! This come to think of it is the first time I have
run a steam route for ages,Must have done something wrong.
So all rather embarrassing, but once again thanks for coming to the rescue Ged.
All the best for Christmas
and many thanks
Andy

HI Andy,
I'm pleased you got it sorted Smile
I've not heard about Steam Rep - what is it/what does it do?
The only Steam Rep I can find on Google is a Community site which seems to be about, or preventing, scammers!!

Best wishes to you and your family santa

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Ged,

If it is the one I'm thinking about it is

3DTRAINS ADDON FOR MICROSOFT TRAIN SIMULATOR
Smoke Image Replacement v1.1
File Date: 12.08.05

I've just had a quick look on their website and it is here http://www.3dtrains.com/downloads/misc.shtml

There is also a diesel version.

Regards, and Happy Christmas,

Stephen

Hi Andy,
Thanks Smile
I can understand how applying steamrep would improve your smoke/steam effects, but it still doesn't explain why/how you lost the default effects!

As an experiment, I removed the smokemain.ace file, but MSTS wouldn't start with a steam loco, giving various error messages and returning to the Activity Selection screen!!

Thanks, also to Stephen santa

Cheers,
Ged
