Hi Art,

That is simple you have run out of WATER, you should always check water level in the boiler, and you have enough water in the tender,or tanks, simple answer stop at a water column some where and fill the tank,so you don't run out of water.

When you started the activity were you on shed,if so maybe you should have filled up with water before you left,I always run with MSTS set to automatic fireman it helps.

Oh and BR have just given you the tin tack, the sack.

Hi Art,
That's the good thing with MSTS,on the real railways you wouldn't be able to save and go back;)

Hi Art
Yes you can also if you have a tender with a water scoop you can also pick up water from water troughs if they are in the route.

Hi Art,

At the back of the tender in the middle is a large hump that is where the water goes in,the best thing is when the route starts press I think either 1 or f1 and the help comes up scroll down and it will tell you how to add water.

No Art I never worked for BR,I was with B.O.A.C\BA,then worked for South African Railways, and finally Hounslow Council Social Services.

I'm not sure I want to disagree with people that are much more knowledgeable than myself when it comes to MSTS,but on the Cambrian Route (2) you are told at the start of some activities where you can pick up water, sometimes it appears to only be available at certain places even though there are Water Towers at other locations along the Route-BUT- I may be wrong !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Art,

As you are coming off shed I think you need to fill up with water before collecting the tanks, other thing are you using automatic fireman,if not you have to watch the water in the glasses, when it gets low then open the injectors.

Blowing the fusible plug means your boiler is out of water. I think if you press f5 it shows you how much coal and water you have got,and the rate you are using them.

Roger is 100% correct. The default setting for water (not troughs) or fuel points is "not working", so any that are required to operate have to be specified by the author from within the AE. Sometimes water columns are purely scenic and will never work.

Given that the player loco is an 8F with a full 4,000 gallon tender and that it's only an hour goods run, the most likely cause of the meltdown is the Automatic Fireman being unintentionally unchecked in the MSTS options.

Art
When you start the activity what exactly tell what to do I know it say you are on shed and go and collect tanks and take to,does it mention any thing about taking on water or coal before collecting the tank wagons.

If it doesn't then have you got automatic fireman switched on,if not switch it on,you shouldn't then run out of water,it is the way you are driving the loco, you have to juggle the cut off and regulator and watch the water level in the glasses. If driving with automatic fireman switched off, you also have to use the dampers and injectors, and various other controls.Automatic fireman does all that for you,all you have to do is concentrate on is driving.

Hi Art,
The 0.97 shown in the F5 display means the boiler contains 97% of the water it requires, ie, it's nearly full!!

If you press the F5 button again, to get the first screen with white printing, have a look down the right hand side, about halfway down the list, you'll see an entry for Water, which shows about 2985lb at the start of the activity.  When you use the Automatic Fireman, this value will be replenished when required.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Ged

Hi Art,

Most of the bigger SAR\SAS steam loco's were a bit like MSTS they had automatic stokers,a screw like contraption that transferred the coal to the boiler,I believe BR trialled some thing similar on the 9f's.

When I was working at Pinetown freight yard and had to go to Mobeni Yard in Durban I used to go down on the cab of a steam loco,or either a 1E or 5E electric loco, the first batch of 1E's were built by MetroVick in 1925 and the final batch by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn in 1944,a total of 190 were built and ran on  3kv DC,finally withdrawn from service in 1990,a total of 65 years service.
